So, I have really been enjoying this game, but with so little time after work, I have been using the starter decks. I decided to use the Leadership deck against the Passage through Mirkwood scenario. I had won with this deck my first game that I had ever played. I tried the other decks but had no such luck so I brought them back.
The game started out great as my first hand of cards included Gandalf. I was tempted to hold him back maybe waiting for better time, but I figured I could get a jump on the first quest card and get more cards into my hands for some extra punch. In the long run this was a good move.
The first few turns were great as I blew right past the first quest card. While some location cards were coming up, it was a good mix of monsters and locations and I did not get stung by some of those very bad event cards. Very near the beginning I also drew the Caledrian's Stone which gives a +2 to questing. This is a great card to get early and when attached to Aragorn would allow him to be an awesome quest person, then pay a resource, and become a monster killer all in one turn.
Things were going very well, sure there were a few setbacks, but I had got to the third card where I needed 10 quests to end the game. I had an abundance of ally cards to deal with any monster threat that came my way. Sure, I had taken some damage to all my heroes, but I was so close to winning.
With one huge sweep I pushed for the final win. I used all my heroes and allies in one quest step which gave me 10 progress tokens on the last card which would allow me to win the game... except the quest encounter deck drew Ungoliant's Spawn.
The one card which would thwart my VICTORY!!!
I was stunned, but not out. The tough part is that I had used all my heroes and allies to quest and there was another two monsters and well as this Spawn to defend against. It looked like a disaster from victory!
Lucky for me I had the Grim Resolve in my hand and enough resource tokens. This allowed me to ready all characters in play which gave me enough people to defend against this horde and even attack back. I wiped out the two monsters and dealt some good damage to the Spawn!
Since I did not need to quest an ymore only bad cards could really take me out. My heroes were lucky and survived two more rounds and sent the spawn back to where it came from and claimed victory... this time for good!
It was a great ending and really showed how well this game can work when everything comes together!

Hopefully this won't spoil your win, but did you remember the Spawn's "When Revealed" effect on the turn it popped up? If you counted 10 willpower over what the threat in the staging area was (at least that's how I read that part), but the Spawn gives everyone -1 willpower when it first comes out.

Yes, I accounted for that and still had plenty. Even with this negative I had the 10 total I needed.

Nice... That's one of the aspects of this game that I like so much. The expected randomness of the adventure. You never know if what it will be. You can be crushed in two rounds and then reset the game and have a blast pushing to the very end. Random? Yes, but well within means and well within the theme of the game.
Glad you are enjoying it.

Woot! Nice win and your story was dramatically told, you had me on the edge of my seat lol. The spawn has wiped out my whole group before.

Had a nice time reading your description and indeed, the feelings you describe I also have with every game I play. You just know that no matter how good (or bad! :what
it's going, it can all change within a second and the next card you draw. That is why this game deserves love....
Thank you for your description and sharing it
