Am I to understand that there's no way to regain health in that case ? or is it only beers that are forbidden ? What are you supposed to do with them ?

Just beer is banned, any other life restoring card is allowed.
Essentially you have a 'blank' card in your hand, useful if the other player steals a card from your hand

Yep but the owner of the game said something like "the spirit of the rule was to forbid all life gaining, as beer was the only way when the rule was created.." of course i couldn't say otherwise because i've got no idea.

Of course I lost that game..

When those new cards came out, nothing more was said. So it is still just beer. The spirit of the rule is still there because beer is more available than the other drinks in the game. So using tequila or whiskey won't drag out the game indefinitely.

Also, don't forget that Tequila or Whiskey (or Saloon or Canteen) can ONLY be played during your turn and not to regain your last life during an opponent's turn like Beer.

Read the FAQ. When rules was created, there was Saloon which is not forbidden.

It is important to note that the rule is that when there are only 2 players remaining, Beer cards have NO EFFECT. So that means you can play them, only they don't regain life points.

Why do you want to play a Beer if you don't regain any life points? Well, in Wild West Show I can think of some situations, but let's stick to The Bullet (I'm sure there are more, these are the ones I can think about now):

- If your character is Suzy Lafayette and you have only 1 card and it's a beer, you play the beer and you can gain another card.

- If you see the next A Fistful of Cards card is "A Fistful of Cards" (You are the objective of as many Bang! as cards you have in your hand), you may want to play as many cards as you can.

But what else can you do with a Beer card besides playing it? You can use the card to be able to play the Dodge City cards that require you to discard one card, as Rissa, Springfield, Tequila, etc. Also to increase the number of cards in your hand to have better odds if the other player plays Cat Balou, Panic...

Playing a Beer without regaining 1 life point can be interesting also if you or one of your allies is Madam Yto (from Bang! Gold Rush).
