Just want to confirm whether we understood the rules correctly on this Rumor card.

THE MAN IN BLACK
Mythos Ability: Investigators who end their movement in the French Hill streets may deal with the Man in Black to gain power. They roll dice equal to their current Sanity and for every failed die, the lose 1 Sanity. If this reduces them to 0 Sanity, they are devoured and the player must start a new character. Otherwise, they gain 1 Clue token and draw 1 Spell.

I had 6 sanity. I failed on every die. We read it as not being a skill check, and therefore clues couldn't be spent to re-roll nor could [The Student]'s ability be used to re-roll the dice.

That meant that my investigator was devoured.

Correct?

Thanks.

Correct, this is not a skill check and no abilities that allow for rerolls or additional dice in a skill check could be used.

Sorry--you're out! That's the risk of dealing with the Man in Black.

For that very reason, I rarely take him up on his offer unless I have some way to prevent sanity loss (I am Harvey Walters or have Whiskey, or Leo's in the game, or I have the Golden Trumpet or Ammi Pierce ally, etc). In fact, I'm more likely to screw with Blood Magick because three clues are a bit more useful than a clue and a spell.

I just throw this in as well.

Since it uses the term "failed die" then being Blessed or being Cursed does come into effect.
