The investigators are supposed to be fairly balanced at the start of the game. Is there one that you prefer to play with? What makes this charactor so appealing to you? Which game did he or she come from? Conversely are there any you don't care to play as? I'll start us off.

I only have the investigators from the original, but I like to play with Jenny Barnes, Harvey Walters, or Ashcan Pete.
Jenny's $1 upkeep is so handy that most of the time you don't have to worry about being too poor to afford medical care. Harvey can cast most spells for free with the lesser sanity loss. Ashcan Pete is a little trickier, but for me he is just fun to play as.
I don't care for Michael McGlen except as a charactor for a first time player to play as. His play style is too straitforward for my taste.

IIRC, Harvey prevents 1 point of sanity loss, not sanity cost. So you can't cast spells for free since theyhave costs. Hopefully someone who has played more recently like tibbs, grudunza, or coltsfan76 can back this up (or tell me I'm wrong if I am).

I like Monterey Jack. The starting weapons and unique item ability are nice.

You are correct! Harvey's ability lessens the loss of sanity not cost. So his ability doesn't lessen the sanity cost when casting spells.

Yep: Harvey can't reduce costs. Daisy Walker reduces spell costs.
It's hard to pick a favorite, but I've always had a special place in my heart for Diana Stanley. Though, since reading Dance of the Damned, I've been really interested in Tony Morgan.
Base game? Tough to say. I don't want to be corny and say Mandy but it's hard to argue against starting with every item type and many clues, and having a universal special ability.

As Van the Man said........G-L-O-R-I-A
I hate going into other worlds all clued up and ready for a seal only to lose half them and get kicked out due to an impossible gate card. Gloria makes the other worlds so much easier.

Agnes Baker from Innsmouth.
From the base game, probably Bob Jenkins

Rauli Kettunen

Sister Mary (base game)
Followed very, very (very, very) closely by Trish Stra, err, Scarborough of Innsmouth.
Least favourites: Amanda Sharpe, Dexter Drake, George Barnaby, Vincent Lee (Jim Culver isn't far off that list).

I have a sweet spot for Carolyn Fern as she where my first

But in later games, I have grown fond of Patrice Hathaway as her ability is awesome.

I like them all except a few ones like Jenny Barnes, Ashcan Pete, Bob Jenkins, Carolyn Fern, Vincent Lee & Min Thi Phan.
If I could choose one for a game, I'd pick Jacqueline 'Game Breaker' Fine for every single game ^^.

Wow Sister Mary is atrocious in my opinion I thought Dexter Drake sucked at first but after a few plays and with more idea of how to play a spell based character, he gets better and I sort of like him now. Wouldn't pick him on purpose mind you.
We usually play this two player with two investigators each, and for each one we draw two investigators randomly and choose one, to avoid playing the same ones all the time but have some choice in case one or both of them are not great.
In the base game I prefer Ashcan Pete, Harvey Walter or Joe Diamond. In the expansions Wilson Richards, Zoey Samaras, Patrice Hathaway, Silas Marsh and Willaim Yorick are all great.
I'd prefer to avoid the likes of Leo Anderson, Monterey Jack, Minh Thi Phan and Charlie Kane.

Mary always does well for me, like keeping her Blessing 11+ turns. And I play her RAW and have always done so, while other people added house rules regarding her Blessing. Mary's Lore/Luck slider is great, allowing her 4/3 or 3/4 which is enough to see her roll at least one die in the OWs while also being able to cast spells, whereas Dexter either casts spells and auto-fails Luck or barely casts spells to have a slim shot at a Luck test.
Single random draws for me, no picking investigators.

Dam, you talk as if you still played this game.

The most helpful are probably the investigators that get some kind of income, but other than those, I've had a lot of fun with Mark Harrigan from Dunwich.
His ability is nice and thematically we always get a laugh how he can't be bothered with all the stuff trying to slow him down.

Amanda Sharpe, the Swiss army knife of investigators. Also among my favorites to play are Angus Baker and Wilson Richards (Shotgun, Motorcycle and being able to ignore locations to take money is a great combo).
Most powerful/ useful: Harvey the Wonder Hamster, The Violinist (can't remember her name), and Carolyn Fern.

I like evaders and that's how I use Wilson Richards. Fast when he wants to, sneaks when he wants, has a backup shotgun and always has a buck if he needs it and always ready for anything.
Wendy's a better evader but that's pretty much her only trick. Well, except for the starting Elder Sign.

The first investigator I used was Kate, and she's my number one. She can really keep the doom track down and, like Gloria, has a much better chance of surviving OW encounters, since she can't be attacked by monsters.
I like Hank. Not having to take horror checks, maxing out his fight skill, is huge.
Rex is another favorite. He's been cursed so long, he just goes with the flow and shrugs it off. Once he gets that first seal and straightens himself out, he gets even better. He's vulnerable, but a couple of favorable encounters and he's home free.
With personal stories having been added in IH, feeding Marie $6 so she can pass hers, makes her invaluable. She can have seven spells within four turns, has an extra hand and can get rid of two doomers. She has an average Lore, so she isn't overpowered.

I forgot to mention Hank. He is one of the most fun to play. He encourages role playing. Whenever he is in the game, players are always heard saying "Pa, is that you?", "Where are you Pa?", You're not Pa" and other similar expressions. When he kills things and thus ignores his SAN check, your will hear things like " I once saw a two headed cow back on the farm" or "That's the weirdest lookin' bear that I've ever seen"
We had him die (get devoured) one time in the most fitting manner. He was in the outerwrold on top of a mountain, and plumb forgot to breathe. Has last words were "Pa, are you up here?".

I'd have to say that my 4 favorite investigators are Zoey Samaras, Mark Harrigan, Kate Winthrop, and Leo Anderson. Given the choice, I usually end up with one of them. Lately, I've played Zoey alot; she and Mark just seem so crazy to start with that they are great fun.
Hank Samson and Tony Morgan are not far behind. I just played Ursala Downs and Patrice Hathaway for the first time a few months ago, and both seem like they could both become another favorite of mine. My oldest daughter tends to like Patrice, being a violinist herself, so I don't get to play her often.
Characters are chosen either randomly or by player choice, depending on our mood. Since the the investigators' Personal Story cards came out, it's mostly player choice as we always use those cards.

A lot of investigators picked who I think are abysmal. Very interesting. Other favorites using personal stories are Dexter Drake, Minh Thi Phan, Roland Banks and Daisy Walker.

I like Hank, just because he's so derpy. I like to roleplay it up a bit. Maybe I'm a masochist, but I enjoy playing Rex Murphy, just because starting out cursed but having a very powerful ability otherwise is interesting. I also like Luke, just because he starts in an other world.
