Is the buildings used for anything? Do they have any special effects? Or are they just things to move in and out of?

They may have items?

It doesn't matter where you go?

You can search in building and get cards. You cannot search outside. Many buildings have Pick Up Abilities printed in them. They allow you to take specific things when searching (usually only from the discard pile, but there are exceptions), instead of a normal search.

Many scenarios or cards will require you to go somewhere specific, so that's how you know where to go.

Thank you

So they are destinations and places to find things but it's not like you can get help by a specific person (well maybe in a scenario) at one place or heal your wounds in another one or something like that.

Not that I'm aware of - can't think of anything like that off the top of my head. Each building has items or actions you can take with the Hero discard pile. Also, some characters like Jenny get bonus's in certain buildings if they are in it too.

If you play with the Well stocked optional rule, then nearly every building has a special advantage right from the start ; Go to the Gun shop to grab some ammo, or to the Hospital to find First Aid kit.

That's the same with regular rules, except that you can search for theses items only when they've been previously discovered (and used).

Also, with theSurvival of the fittest expansion, barricades could be build on buildings, and some scenario ask you to go to specific buildings to retrieve survivors or to clean it and turn it as a safe house.
