Hi all

Someone in our gaming group has picked this game up. None of us has played it before. Is 3 hours a realistic estimate of how long this takes? What about with 6 players?

I usually play it 3 player and that runs about 3-4 hours for my group.

A bad day at gaming is better than a good day at work.

I would estimate 30-45 minutes per player (45-60 for newbies).

New players may take over an hour per person. You should be able to get this down to 45 minutes or less per person with experience.

You probably don't want to do that. I try to play with 3 or 4. The downtime can get to be a bit much at 5 unless you are playing with fast players.

I usually play with the "fast rules" which cuts my playing time for a 2 player game to about 90 minutes or less.

Our rules of thumb for all games of the empire builder series:
30 minutes per experienced player who knows the map
45 minutes per experienced player who is unfamiliar with the map
60 minutes per new player
In case of all new players, add 50%

We tried a 6 player game with 3 new players and it was terrible. I'd suggest teaching them in a couple of 3 player games (if you have 2 experienced players).

I once played a six-player game of Iron Dragon with a couple experienced players and a couple of noobs/slowbies. Iron Dragon is an Empire Builder series game with some extra bells and has the longest playing time of the series. It took FOREVER. Of course, that is from the perspective of a guy that plays 99% of his EB series games as 2-player with a buddy who's also played a zillion EB games. Very different experience; I think we usually finish in about an hour.
