I'm not sure why you'd want to play Cosmic Encounter with two players (In fact I don't think it really flows with anything less than four, personally), but it occurs to me that the Team Cosmic rules would technically allow you to play a two player game, with two races each.

Is there any reason I'm missing as to why this wouldn't work mechanically?

Nothing that leaps to mind. You'll want some sort of marker for the current player, and you'll have to be careful that you don't mix up the hands of your two races.

Needing each of your two races to get 5 foreign colonies, though, might seem a bit pointless? I dunno.

Yeah I suspect it would work, but that a 4 player 2v2 game is probably also not that great?

Nobody wants to play a two-player game, but if there are only two of you and you're both jonesing for a Cosmic fix, you don't exactly have the option to clone more humans. The Team Cosmic rules basically are how I play two-player, on the three or so occasions I've done it. It certainly wasn't the full Cosmic experience, but it was enjoyable and it beats the heck out of playing checkers or watching Jersey Shore.

Well, you do have the option, it's just illegal. whistle

Worth pointing out that the official team rules are for 5-8 players. In other words, a duel is not officially endorsed by FFG (and, indeed, I can't imagine playing CE without any possibility of politicking).
