Hi all,
My local game store has a bunch of guys getting started in Flames of War and from my research, this looks like something I'd like to try. The current direction is mid-war and about 600-1000 points with the guys currently distributed like: 8 Germans, 1 Brit, 1 French, 2 Italian, 1-2 Soviet, 1-2 US, 1 Romanian, 1 Finn. I know there are a couple of early war things in there somewhere, but I don't know who exactly. The owner suggested another Allied army would be a good pick.
Here's my issue. I want to put together an order at my local store with the 3rd edition rulebook and some minis to get me started but without the resources, I think I'm stuck. I can't get to the store due to scheduling issues, so I'm stuck putting something together online and giving him a call. I've been looking at the FoW website and before I knew the mid-war thing, was excited about putting together a British unit (Scots Division) with carriers since I've liked the universal carriers and variations from my ASL days.
So here's where I'm asking for some help from the experienced Fow players here on the Geek.
1. Should I just bite the bullet and get the 2nd ed rulebook with the 3rd ed mini book or wait until the 3rd edition set comes out?
2. Is there an army list for mid-war Allied unit with carriers that I can deploy in Europe and what game components would be involved?
3. I see that there is a cool box set for the U.S. Armored Rifle Platoon. It looks interesting and since it is labeled as both mid and late war, would this be a good starting box to fill out to 600 or so points with some Sherman tanks or something?
4. Any Stalingrad Soviet options? That particular battlefield is very interesting to me but putting together a Soviet army seems like it could be very money and time intensive.
I realize this is pretty open ended, so I thank any and all who replay to these questions in advance.
Lost and confused,
Maus

Hi,
3rd edition will be out in about a month. I'd wait for that so you don't end up with an out of date book. In order to choose your force you really need an army book. I suggest North Africa for mid war since you have some intrest in brits. For soviets you'll want the east front book. The army book will have pretty much everything you need to know to build an army. I understand the third edition will come with some generic army lists so if you are looking to save money you may want to just wait and see if one of those lists will work for you. I wouldn't order any minis until you've had a chance to look at an army book.

Definately plan ahead, borrow or buy a force list of some description before buying models, you don't want to end up with something you can't use.
you might find the army building spreadsheets at this link useful http://www.mediafire.com/FoWArmyFiles
I'm not sure what the US availability is like, but look out for companies such as Plastic soldier company - make plastic model kits, cheap but limited range. Forged in battle - Continuously expanding range of 15mm WWII infantry/vehicles Zvezda - Make 15mm soviets and german plastic kits for their art of tactic game, very cheap, but limited range, also only the vehicles are 15mm (1:100 scale) the guns and infantry are larger (1:72 scale)
The pre-built army boxes are usually a reasonable compostion to start with, but if you are keener to play a brit force I would go with them rather than going US because the box set is available.
The more armour you fit into your list the cheaper it generally is to buy, with careful planning you can pick units that fit into rifle, armoured rifle and armour lists, making it easier and cheaper to field different kinds of forces.

1. No I would wait for the new rules. You may get confused.
2. The lists that come with it will most likely be late war so north Africa book is a good start. They havens war Germans (heer) Americans, Italians and British. The focus is on the Germans and the British. The eastern front book has Italians, Romanians, Hungarians, Finns, and soviets. The focus being on the Germans who add ss units and the soviets.
3. Be aware that even thought the us armored rifles are great, the box you are Looking at is only a platoon. This means that you have to buy another box plus a hq box. That will probably cost over $150.
I recommend to all new players to get an infantry company box and go from there. You can always use infantry in your force so they will never go to waste.
You also said you likes carriers. If that means you like mobile infantry then I would suggest German gezparte panzergrenadiers. They are the best mechanized infantry in the game with the new rules.
I hope that helps

Thank you all for your responses.
I think I'm still interested in pursuing the US Armored Infantry. Here are 2 lists that I've put together and one list suggested to me. Any insight into the better list would be appreciated!
My lists:
Here's my original list. I have a mix of infantry, armor and some mortars for smoke and hopefully pinning units.
1x Armored Inf Co HQ w/Baz (60pts) 1x Armored Inf Plt w/2 sections & 2 Baz teams (225pts) 1x Armored Mtr Plt w/3 sections & 1 .50cal (130pts) 1x Armor Plt w/3 M5A1 Stuart (185pts)
Total: 600pts
The other options I was considering had some scouts, but it shrinks down a lot of the other options. I have the feeling it might be too spread out.
1x Armored Inf Co HQ (45pts) 1x Armored Inf Plt w/2 sections & 2 Baz teams (225pts) 1x Armored Mtr Plt w/1 section & 1 .50cal (95pts) 1x Armor Plt w/3 M5A1 Stuart (185pts) 1x Recon Plt w/1 squad (50pts)
Total: 600pts
Here's the list someone suggested to me that is playable in an Infantry Aces campaign and a possibly a good starter.
Company HQ - 30 - 1 x CiC - 1 x 2iC - 1 x Jeep w/ AA MG - 1 x M3 Halftrack w/ .50cal AA MG
2 x Armored Rifle Platoon - 215 - 2 x Rifle Squads - 2 x Bazooka Teams
Armored Mortar Platoon - 80 - 3 x Mortar Sections
Recon Platoon - 60 - 2 Scout Squads
Total Points - 600 Platoon Count - 4
Thanks you for your time and input.

Be aware if you are playing an infantry aces campaign that the initial phase is 500 points and you are limited on armored vehicles. Your game store may change the rules a little but if they don't then your list will be off.
If you are settled on Armored rifles but you are starting with an infantry aces campaign you might want to start with the armored rifle platoon blister. It has no halftracks but it has all the infantry you would get in the box. They should be enough (2 blisters and the Hq blister) to get started. One you are ready to go full out, buy the halftracks and some decals to finish the set.
AR platoom box x2 = $160 AR HQ = $21 Total = $181
AR dismounted platoon blister x2 = $46 Inf or AR dismounted Hq = $12.50 total $58.50
Then when you are ready:
9 halftracks =$110.50 jeeps = $ 14 decals = 12.50
Total= $136.50 Total total= $195
The boxes will save you only $14 but you have to front the money for everything.
In the end if you have the money go for the boxes. If you are even a bit unsure or if money is a bit tight, go for the blisters. Either way you can play.
