At least this thread answers why possessed tank suddenly disappeared from the front page. I had no idea that only general threads are visible there.
Possessed tank will be back!

No. "General" allows for non-dedicated wargame forum readers to have a better chance of coming across it accidentally. There are non-wargamers who read military history.

look, you can't install a moderator and then find that he has nothing to do. So you split up the forum so het gets a reason to move things around. High scores on KPIs, managament happy. Users perplexed to unhappy.

Look, clearly this whole subforum thing is flawed. What goes where appears to depend on the topic set by the OP. A thread on CRT modelling in Case Blue can degenerate into Brezhnev boob shots and it'll still stay in General because of the topic heading. This is stupid.
Now that I've proven the absurdity of it all: TRASH THE SUB FORUMS!
Thank you.

I will make one observation, which is not entirely scientific, but empirical in nature, and it is an observation I can now safely make as this thread has been consigned to the wargaming dustbin. I have kept one eye on the new thread postings in the 'general' forum since the split of the wargaming forum into these new sub-forums. From what I can see, it's still the same people posting threads, and mostly the same people responding to those threads, as before the split. I thought this split was done to encourage apparent wargaming lurkers who claimed to have been intimidated by the 'suffocating nature' of insider jokes posted by the old guard to come out of their closets and begin to contribute to the forum. I do recall quite vividly some people who had apparently been amongst these supposed lurkers posting some crowing threads and responses with their fervent support of the busting up of the old forum, almost taunting the old regime. Now, however, it seems as though those people have shrunk back into the shadows. I can't say as I can recall seeing even one new thread in the general wargaming forum from the people who were proclaiming victory over the old crew. All of this upheaval, and at the end of the day, it does not seem to have accomplished its primary goal.
Just sayin'.

This is interesting if true, because the original argument used was that this will quickly become a non-issue since the new UI will be out soon. I submit that 11 months or more is not understanding of what soon means. I have adapted to having to look around for items, so that is not too much of a problem for me, I guess my point is I hope soon means sooner than next year.

That's it. I'm outta here until the subfora are scrapped, or the new interface makes using these forums manageable. See y'all over at CSW in the meantime.

The sense of entitlement they have displayed throughout all this has been astonishing. You seriously think that the reason those who don't participate here don't do so is because they think they won't get enough thumbs for doing so?
You confuse me sometimes. Your comments seem suffused with such a sense of alternate reality that I sometimes wonder which BGG you're talking about.

You all know who does this. I think most people thumb what they like, not just what they deem to "merit" the precious thumbs, and they are not necessarily mutually exclusive. And we all know deserving posts or wargamers also get their share of acknowledgements despite the shenanigans.

It may be that the "old crew" (read: lifestylers) have made the forums such a distasteful place to be, with their constant pissing, moaning, and childish antics, that anyone with better things to do is probably possessed of the desire to just go and do those things rather than waste their time trying to make themselves heard starting new threads among the noise which now populates not just one forum, but three. And yeah, that includes the clicky-brigade, who thumb up their buddies to rack up each other's meaningless thumb totals - I said before, this is going to actively dissuade those "lurkers" you're talking about, who see the smart-arse comments get the lion's share of attention, and just not bother. Pete posts about his leaving for CSW as if it was a threat. A few more clique lifestylers heading for greener pastures would probably do the site some good, to be honest. The sense of entitlement they have displayed throughout all this has been astonishing.
I personally enjoy both your and Pete's posts. I do think complaining about who and what gets thumbs is odd, but I will thumb you for it anyway!

For us, the big thing is that you can see all the wargame subfora, assuming of course that you set up your personal front page that way. For the general visitor to BGG, they'll see wargame/general only, until they fall for our charms and join the thumb bombing posse.
Speaking of subfora, they're here to stay. The biggest problem from my perspective is the fuzzy line between "historical context" and "general".
In related news, the poll is currently running pretty strongly in favour of keeping the AWOL name as is.

Michael, the point I was making is that these things you point out may have all been true, but then the subforums were created so that the 'childish' posts would be isolated off the front page, such that the general forum would be 'cleansed' and dedicated to 'true' wargaming content. And to a large degree, this has happened. Despite this transformation, the lurkers continue to lurk, rather than take advantage of the now more focused general wargaming forum. The table is set for the lurkers to emerge, and yet, to date, I haven't seen them post. So, the admins go out of their way to accommodate these lurkers, disrupting the active forum members, and then...nothing. So, I don't think it's unreasonable for those who have been active in the forum all this time and had their forum participation disrupted to be now somewhat resentful that the lurkers who apparently spurred the admin actions to split the forum still aren't participating. Were they lurkers, or just griefers, and did they just punk the admins with their complaints?

For me it's slow as molasses. Takes forever to load anything up (it's not my connection). I'll try to do my beta feedback duty, but as for actually using BGG for myself, I only use normal BGG. Faster and (so far) easier.

I suspect the new UI is as slow as molasses because it's on a dedicated test server, and from my experience in IT days past, the slowest oldest server usually got to be the test box since the newer faster machines would get put into production.
But yes, slow as molasses.

Glad to hear it. Wasn't sure whether it was extra debug code being run behind the UI, or what. What you say makes sense.
