Things heard while playing our first game of The Resistance…
The cast: Matt – Me (spy) Julie – Wife Luke – 22-year old brother Chance – 13-year old son (spy) Alex – 11-year old daughter
The quotes: Matt (during setup) – “So, do the spies know who each other are?” Alex – “Yup” Matt – “Really? So that lets us know one of them.”
Julie – “So how do we kill people?” Matt – “You don’t. It’s not Werewolf. You just don’t let spies on to the team.” Julie – “I don’t get it.”
Luke – “I know who the spies are.” Matt – “Already? It’s only second turn.” Luke – “It’s got to be Alex and Chance.” Matt – “Hmmm… That sounds like something a spy would say.”
Julie – “So we can’t kill a spy?” Matt – “No! You just don’t put them on the team.” Julie – “Why?” Matt – “Because if you do then we’ll lose.” Julie – “I don’t get it.”
Julie – “Chance can’t be a spy.” Matt – “Why do you say that?” Julie – “Because we just succeeded at a mission he was on.” Matt – “Wouldn’t he want it to look that way.” Julie – “Why can’t I just kill him then?”
Alex – “I didn’t fail that mission!” Matt – “I think you protest that mission too much my little spy!” Alex – “I’M NOT A SPY!” Luke – “Yes, you are. Spy!” Alex – “AAAARRRGGGG!”
Julie – “Matt, tell me if you are the spy. I’m your wife so you need to tell me.” Matt – “I’m not a spy.” Luke – “Yeah right….” Matt – “Now that’s what a spy would say!”
Matt – “Alright… We’ve failed two missions and passed two. If the spies get us on this fifth one then we lose. I’m the leader, who should I choose?” Luke – “I know the spies are Alex and Chance.” Julie – “It’s Luke and Alex. Don’t put them on the team.” Luke – “I think Julie’s been playing dumb to throw us off the trail?” Julie – “I want to kill someone! Why can’t I just kill the spy and see if I’m right!?!?” Matt – “That’s not the way it goes.” Julie – “Luke’s a spy and Alex is too” Luke – “No way! It’s Alex and either Chance or Matt!”
Matt – “So who do we choose?” (looking conflicted) Julie – “I’ll let you buy another board game if you put Chance, me and you on the team.” Luke – “Not fair! Chance is a spy!” Julie – “A board game, Matt. Put Chance, me and you on the team.” Luke – “We’re going to die! Chance and Alex are the spies!” Alex – “I’m not!” Matt – “Yes, you are! You said so yourself!” Alex – “ARRRRGGGG!”
Matt – “Alright. Me, Julie and Chance on the final mission. Let’s vote.” Julie – “WHAT????? TWO FAILS???? But you said you weren’t the spy!!!!!!” Matt – “That’s the way the game goes honey!” Julie – “I never want to play this stupid game again!”
After 30 minutes of watching a TV show….
Julie – “Alright…. I want to play that game again…”
As you can tell… This ain’t your mother’s game of Werewolf!

Chance is a man of action! He played his part well with but grunts and a few softball accusations. If I would have written this sooner (it's been over a month) I think I could have given him some more.

We have a winner! Evidently, she DOES know how to play The Resistance, just not in the way I appreciate!

Great reading, and really nice session! The parts with your wife wanting to kill the spy were amusing!

I really want to get this game, I find it so much more appealing than Werewolf... but then again, I got a werewolf fanatic in my group that I fear would really be upset if I tried to push this game instead of his "Lupus in Tabula"...

Werewolf is fun. My biggest sales pitch for The Resistance is asking, "Doesn't it just stink to be one of the first people killed?" Usually they become instant bystander and get to watch a bunch of other people having the real fun. If our session was a game of Werewolf, my daughter Alex would have been axed first round because of her innocent slip. Instead, it became a driving force of suspicion for the entire game and actually led to Chance and me winning.
Don't get me wrong though, Werewolf can be incredibly hilarious and awesome but it's more left to chance. My best session of Werewolf was a Valentine's Dinner date where two guys were selected as lovers. Interesting enough one of these was a Werewolf and the other was the Little Girl who could peek at the Wolves. As they both protected each other, it came down to having the Little Girl guy get the Sheriff role as well. This led to the the last three townsfolk going down begging the Little Girl guy to go after the remaining Werewolf that was his Lover. They pulled off the win and quickly rushed to embrace each other as part of their triumph. That was incredible! Unfortunately, that rarely happens. When it does it is epic.
Give The Resistance a try. I think you will see some incredible social structure fun in ways Werewolf doesn't itch!

I agree. You should get it any way and suggestion you play both. They're both fantastic.
Love this session report by the way! Awesome.
