For anyone familiar with "The Mountains of Madness," arguably H.P. Lovecraft's greatest work, which provided key inspiration for the game of Arkham Horror:

Who knows what kind of Eldritch horrors they may uncover down there!goo

I've immersed myself with so many "ancient alien life buried under Antarctica" stories that it's hard to choose which one to warn against.

The ironic thing is that the best place on Earth to recover meteorites (particularly from Mars) is Antarctica! But for the opposite reason of being buried: they're easy to see on the white ice!

If I start hearing about human-sized penguins down there I am digging myself a fallout shelter tomorrow!

The parallels are already eerie... the picture of the camp looks like a 21st century version of Lovecraft's AtMoM camp; the fact that they have to complete their drilling before the weather gets too rough for the planes (just like in AtMoM); the fervour with which the scientists have been drilling and the subsequent criticism of the rashness of the techniques (just like in AtMoM); and, most eerily eerie of all, from the article:

"The projects are of particular fascination to astrobiologists, who study the origins and likely distribution of life across the Universe."

Assuredly, these prehistoric lakes contain things too terrible to contemplate, the comprehension of which would drive one to madness!

WE ARE DOOMED!
