Do not have Miskatonic but was wondering whether the Player Reference sheets make some changes to the base rules to scale better with number of players?

I don't have Miskatonic yet but I'm pretty sure those are just player aids, they don't change anything in terms of scaling.

They are just for reference about what already is established.

Ok thanks for that info.

Do you people that have more experience than me with this game believe there is a huge jump between 4 and 5 players in terms of scaling because of the extra monsters that happen at that gap?

The sweet spot is 4 investigators for this very reason. You maximize player turns but minimize mythos damage. So whether playing solo, 2-player or 4-player, you should strive to have 4 investigators.

The extra monster is most hurtful with 5 vs. 8 of course. But it is an attempt to make the game more difficult given the extra "turns."

4 is the sweet spot for 0 or 1 expansion boards, but for 2 or 3 expansion boards you might want to consider using 5 or even 6 investigators.

The problem is I don't often plan how many players there will be. We play with the people that show up. So when we are 5 it's gonna be more difficult then 4.

I guess we can live with it. But an idea for a variant might be to do something that scales differently so when the bump up to 2 monsters comes along something else would be a little bit easier.

But more monsters also means more trophies cool

For me it's not normally the number of Monsters that affect the game so much (they just lead to an occasional rise in the Terror level, no big deal really). No, for our group it's the change in the Gate Limit. Once you start getting over 4 Investigators, the Gate Limit drops to a level that requires a great deal more management if you don't want a couple of bad Encounters ("A Gate and a Monster appear") to end the game (or wake the AO, depending on how you play).
