I'm working on prototyping a new game and was wondering if i could get some imput on some symbols i am
If you were going to guess, what word would you say each symbol was to represent? It's for a kind of half tile-laying half word-gameish thing so I'd really rather not use actual words, but they need to have somewhat consistent interpretations. Hopefully not too consistent though.

This is version 2 of the symbols:
Version 1 can be found here: http://i.imgur.com/NmMfW.png
Edit: You can find the results of the first round of IDing and a bunch of notes on the changes and replies and other junk in this post.
Edit 2: Sorry i forgot to do this, but i started a thread for the game that these symbols are for here. Thanks.

Well context matters (what is this game about?), but knowing nothing else than "it's a board game"
1A - Place worker here. 1B - Place card here. 1C - Pick a number (?) 1D - Plus (not sure plus what) 1E - Choose one card from those available.
2A - Draw a random card/event. 2B - Vote for what is proposed. 2C - Vote against what is proposed. 2D - Auction something to/buy something from another player. 2E - Place a card from your hand/board into the common pool.
3A/3B/4C/4D - Get VPs for whatever is left/right/above/below this tile. 3C - You can't put anything here. 3D - Slide cards to the right. 3E - Shuffle these cards and draw one at random.
4A - Minus (?) 4B - Equals 4E - Throw this away.

Most have no meaning to me at all, and those that do may not be what you are looking for - B2, for example, is to me the gesture given at an amphitheatre to slaughter a defeated gladiator, and A2 is the sign of Ka Faraq Gatri, also called The Oncoming Storm...

B2 means the defeated gladiator may live. C2 means either slit his throat or feed him to the lions. Are you making a gladiator game?

Didn't the symbol left by the Bringer of Darkness not have a downward section, just a loop open to the left?

A1 - person / player
A2 - question / wildcard A3 - thing to the right (left?) A4 - remove / less than B1 - a card B2 - yes / good B3 - thing to the left (right?) B4 - equal to C1 - numbers / numeric C2 - no / bad C3 - disallowed / forbidden C4 - thing above (below?) D1 - add / more than D2 - show a thing to another player / buy a thing D3 - move a thing / pass play / to the right of a thing D4 - thing below (above?) E1 - take a thing from the table E2 - put a thing on the table E3 - draw a thing from the deck E4 - discard / throw away / point at a ridiculous late-sixties stool
The four that I interpreted as "thing to the left/right/above/below" are the ones I had more trouble with - I guess that the block represents the current thing and the star is the thing to select/consider/whatever, but I wouldn't bet on it not being the other way around. It could also be a "mnove to the " with the star being the starting position!

Obviously I should had read top to bottom.
A1) You / player A2) If / option A3) - A4) You can't / not possible
B1) Card? B2) If 'yes' B3) Left of A3 option? B4) then or if equal
C1) For all numbers C2) If 'no' C3) You can't / (You can't unless?) C4) See all other such symbols (on top of)
D1) Add or heal / health D2) Deal one card / get one card from dealer D3) Move card to the right D4) See ...
E1) Take middle card E2) Leave a card E3) Draw one card E4) Discard or at discard.

One calling card had no downstroke, just the dot, but at other times the full mark is used. Such as on the umbrella.

A1 - Person
A2 - Question / random A3 - Box star A4 - Minus B1 - Card B2 - Good / Success / Approval B3 - Star box B4 - Equals C1 - Keypad / Numbers C2 - Bad / Failure / Disapproval C3 - Forbidden / Cancelled C4 - Star on box D1 - Plus D2 - Purchase / Shop (noun) D3 - Exit D4 - Box on star E1 - Take random (or any) card of value 3 E2 - Put back random (or any) card of value 3 E3 - Take a random card E4 - Put (something) in the bin / discard a card
I would suggest that all you need is for all the symbols to make sense and be memorable once the rulebook has explained them.

A 1 Ink stamp 2 Question 3 Follow a star 4 No entry
B 1 put your stars in each corner 2 my thumb hurts 3 star follows you 4 Authorised Entry only
C 1 Play Sudoku now 2 Strange spray gun 3 Burger time. 4 Put a star on your head.
D 1 Call Ambulance 2 Is this your order sir? 3 Danger: Arrow firing block. 4 You on a star.
E 1,2 (1 and 2 repeatedly) How to be a DJ. 3 Use mind powers. 4 Point at pot (laughing optional)
Symbols meanings are contextual and subjective.
Pros: Makes game look tidier and is language friendly. Cons: Too many glyphs is intimidating to a new player and the learning curve for the game also becomes steeper (Race for the Galaxy anyone?).
I don't think it's a good idea to have millions of hieroglyphics for player actions but I might just be funny that way.
