I was thinking about adding a League of Legends style "trash" option to picking characters while playing the Clockwork mode.

After the first player picks one power, he/she eliminates one from the field. Player two picks two, and eliminates another. This might add another level of meta strategy and balance to the character selection and further balance the coin-flip advantage of picking first.

I'll give it a try this weekend and report back.

Well, the way Clockwork is balanced is by letting the second player pick two abilities that go really well together, or prevent the first player from doing so, or just get the second and third most desirable powers.

Letting the first player prevent this seems like it would give him or her the advantage.

(This should go on the Second Edition page, by the way.)
