I'll be leading a game of Arkham Horror with 9 players tomorrow. None of the others have played this game before (or any other "gamer's" game for that matter), so I was thinking of being the guy that takes care of everything/keeps track of things (monsters in the sky, monster limit, etc.) and reading the cards out loud while the other 8 people are actually playing the game.
I own all expansions and have played them all several times before, but should I include any expansions tomorrow? I have never played with all the expansions at once before (we've never been more than 3-4 players), but as long as I'm taking care of the fiddly parts, would this be a problem for all the new players?
I don't know most of these people (haven't even met 6 of them before) and I think there are at least 7 girls in the group. Not that it matters, but my experience is that girls aren't generally that interested in hardcore gaming...

Good luck! 8 Novices. Use Nyarlathotep or Ithaqua. Better advice, tho is to call in sick.

I'd just use Dunwich myself, so that everybody has something to do.
Definitely don't play yourself. Be the facilitator.

I think your idea of guiding the game and not taking a character is a good one and I guess you will have your hands full. I would also keep the game as simple as possible, just use the base game.
Good luck

I agree, as hard as it is to do keep the expansions out until at least a few of the players have some experience and can help you teach newbies.

as a contrary point, the game gets easier with more players.
with 8 players, it often gets slow b/c there is nothing to do and few clues to collect. another board stretches the team out and adds more problems to deal with.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking that since I'm taking care of everything, the extra rules for having more boards wouldn't matter that much. The players would just be more spread out. I could maybe assign one portion of the board to each player, so that don't have to think at all

The only games I have that are playable for this many players are AH and Twilight Imperium 3rd edition. Can't imagine teaching TI3 to 8 newbies tho...

Nine new players? Wow, good luck! Sometimes when we get that many we split into two groups and play different games but your idea of GMing the game is good too. With that many players though I'd really try to focus on keeping the action going; it's likely to be a long wait between actions for any particular player.

Done it. No problems.
See if you can set everything up ahead of time. I actually hand out the baggies of tokens and tell everyone to "take XYZ and pass it around". Then I walk around the table and give each player their cards, one deck at a time.
Use a newbie house rule that, instead of during upkeep, during the first turn, you may place your slider anywhere on the sheet. Combat's the most complicated part, but I can do the math in my head and say, "Yes, kill it." or "No, don't!".
I *highly* recommend Dunwich. With eight players, the later game can hit anticlimax, when no gates open.
Finally, see if you can find the "Do women play Arkham" thread. Here's my answer! http://www.meetup.com/Play-The-Classics-Board-Game-Meetup/ev...
