Hello!

I have been all over BGG and the Internet, and I still cannot find a great explanation of how the two player game should flow. My husband and I have read the instructions multiple times and we still have questions about game play.

Could someone please outline the game clearly for all of us confused Bohnanza players? Obviously we are not the only ones since so many Internet posts talked about game confusion!

Thanks!

Posting the actual rules first:

The bean duel with two players uses the same rules as the game for three to seven players with the follo wing changes:
Remove the Garden Beans and the Cocoa B eans from the game.
A player may only sell beans fr om his bean fields on his turn.
When a player buys a 3rd bean field, he places the three gold coins face down in the box (out of the game).
The game ends when the draw deck is exhausted for the first time.
On a player’s turn, he does the following in the order indicated:

1. Plant or discard offered bean cards
The player may plant or discar d the bean cards his opponent left as an offer in step 3 of his turn. This is omitted by
the starting player on his first turn.

2. Plant bean cards & discard
After planting one or two cards in his bean fields (as in the normal game), the player may discard one card from
anywhere in his hand face up on the discard pile.

3. Draw, plant, and offer beans
The active player draws the thr ee topmost cards from the draw deck and puts them face up on the table so both
players can see them. I f the topmost card on the discard pile matches any of the cards just drawn, the player adds it
to them. He does the same with the new topmost card from the discar d pile until the topmost card on the discard
pile does not match any of the drawn cards. Now the player may plant any of these drawn (fr om the draw deck or
discard pile) cards he wants, selling such beans as he can and wants in the process. He leaves any drawn car ds he
does not want as an offer to his opponent. He need not plant any of the drawn cards. The players can earn mor e
gold coins through this extended draw.

4. Draw new bean cards
The active player draws two car ds from the draw deck. He draws them one at a time, placing each in turn at the
back of his hand.

So paraphrasing it. The game is changed up quite a bit from the base game.

First, setup: Remove the Garden and Cocoa Beans. Use all other beans and shuffle the deck. You only go through the deck ONCE. Deal 5 cards to each player.

Step 1: Plant "leftover beans" from the previous round. This is skipped the first turn since there are no "leftovers" from a previous turn. Described more below.

Step 2: Plant 1 or 2 beans as normal - either in the same field or 2 different fields. NEW RULE: you may also discard 1 card from anywhere in your hand to the discard pile.

Step 3: Flip over the top 3 cards of the deck as normal (except you are flipping 3 instead of 2).
NEW RULE #1: You also add to this set of 3 cards the top most card of the discard pile IF it matches any of the 3 cards placed up. if the new top most discard matches, draw that too. Keep doing this. This is the big change in the 2-player version because it allows you to take back anything that was harvested and not scored and make it that much more attractive to plant this round.
Now, take what you want, plant it like in the normal game. Then offer anything left to your opponent.
NEW RULE #2: you are not forced to plant any of the beans that you don't want and that your opponent does not want. Instead, these remain face-up on the table (these will form the "leftovers" for the next Step 1).

Step 4: Draw 2 new cards to your hand as normal (except you are drawing 2 instead of 3). That's it, end of turn.

Step 1: Next turn. Now those beans you may have left on the table during Step 3? Your opponent can now plant those for free at this time. If he chooses not to take them, they are simply discarded. They may resurface based on Step 3 and what gets drawn then. Then he goes on to Step 2 of his turn as outlined above.

Couple other rule changes:

1) You can only sell beans on your turn. Which means you can't harvest beans when it is not your turn. You can just hope your opponent leaves them on the table for you so you can harvest on your turn and then take them.

2) When you purchase a 3rd field, the cards are supposed to be returned to the box. This is so they do not get cycled back into the game through the extended draw of Step 3.

That's all there is to it. Hopefully this helps if you understand the basic game already. If not, ask questions please.

If you take cards in step 3, must they be planted immediately or can you put them in the back of your hand?

When you have a 3rd field, are you still only permitted to plant one or two cards?

As far as I know, beans never go into your hand, with the exception of phase 4 when drawing the cards to put in your hands.

Edit: You can indeed take them (as many as you want to) and plant them ... and you can also leave some for your opponent.

You only place cards in your hand during Step 4. Once a card is on the table, it stays there.

Yes, even with a 3rd bean field, you can still only plant 1 or 2 during Step 2. All the 3rd bean field does is let you juggle a little since you don't have to harvest right away. This is the same as the base game.

So perhaps I should back it up and ask: Do you know how to play the base game? If not, the 2-player game may not make much sense. Or at least I may have to describe a bit more than what I have to help you get.

Cards don't go in your hand except Step 4. But you could plant as much as you want to in Step 3.

There are 3 planting opportunities:
Step 1 if your opponent left you any (plant as many or as little as you want),
Step 2 you must plant 1 and may plant a second, both from your hand
Step 3 any cards flipped over from the deck or drawn from from the discard. Anything you accept from the table must be planted. Anything you reject from the table is saved for your opponent's step 1.

There are only 2 times you add cards to your hand:
1) during the initial draw of 5 cards
2) every Step 4 during your turn add 2 more.

Your hand must remain in the strict order you drew it, you do not rearrange it ever. The cards you plant must be the first two cards in your hand.

Brian has done a good job of explaining this game. If you want a more condensed version, check out the FILES area on this game's page. My player aid is called Bohnanza Two Player Turn Order.

It's a fun game for two. The multi-player game is good too, just different. Think of them as two different games in one box.

Thanks for these. I thought I had got the 2-player game sorted, but I hadn't realised that you could trade. Trading in a 2-player game is a little odd, though...

No you have it right. It isn't a trade in the traditional sense of the game (and I clarified my comments to reflect that). You just leave what you don't want from the flip-over and he can then plant them or discard them.
