The only strength cards that need to be played face up are the cards with game text that says play face up?

in other words the game text cards that dont mention playing face up can be played face down to get the benefit of their game text?

That is correct. In general, you want to keep your plays hidden, so the other players don't know how much you are committing to the Challenge. However, there are a few cards that require you to play them face up to get the benefit listed on the card.
If you play them face down, you don't get the benefit.

So is it possible to play a card faceup even if I don't get any benefit from it's text? For the purpose of bluffing.
