Dune without dune? I was looking forward to the remake and then they announced that it was set in the TI universe instead of the Dune universe. At least this retains the value of the original game since purists will have 0 interest in this version.

Let's just hope they don't lose the merchant of venus lawsuit and have to change it to merchant of mars...

Apparently. I'm sure, having lost Zaius's business, that FFG now deeply regrets not trying hard enough to win the rights to the Dune franchise so they could print the game as it originally was...

Oh wait, they pulled out all the stops trying to do exactly that. They even announced back in 2007 that they intended to reprint Dune as Dune, and the only reason they couldn't is because the Herbert estate was unmoving, so they made Rex in an attempt to salvage the game engine they already owned.

I'll also note that Zaius must have a very narrow definition of "purist" since some of the biggest Dune fans on these forums have already come out in optimistic support of Rex - and that's even after they had the rules to read through in their entirety, so it wasn't just naive hope.

I guess some people are just never happy, though. Oh well. Those of us who understand the value of compromise can still have our fun without them.

One last tour here on the Death Star and I can retire. What was that noise?!

Actually, there is no need for deletion of this thread. Those who agree or like to argue can continue to do so.

We all have the ability to abstain from participation in any thread and, barring this post, that will be my option from now on.

This isn't Dune, but neither are most games. Is that holding you back from buying any of those as well?

Arguing for the deletion of a thread is indeed obnoxious but, that said, it's unlikely that many people care if OP is bothered by the retheme of the game.

I didn't "argue for the deletion of a thread". I made an ironic statement that was all.

I wonder what the Herbert Estate was unmoving on??

Clearly, it would be more money in their pocket, no?

It was reprinted a bunch of times already, why not once more?

OT: what in REX takes the place of Sandworms?

The game itself isn't important. Spending time intellectually jousting with likeminded folks is the real reason to game.

They probably saw that it was already semi-announced and played hardball because FFG's reputation was on the line to an extent. I've seen that happen many times.

Yes, I've been wondering why the Herbert estate let this opportunity slip past them too. Maybe you're right and they were playing hardball. If so they clearly overplayed their hand. Now instead of getting a piece of the action they've gotten nothing. And, let's face it, the Dune IP could surely use some more exposure these days. It's not like it's being used for a whole heck of a lot.

If you wanna play DUNE, play Dune is a game that already exists since long time!

You were awaiting a new remake of dune, sorry license troubles arrises, have to wait a little more.

if you wanna enjoy a new TI game, with some others mechanics... play Rex: Final Days of an Empire

Is like depise Thunderstone because the similarities to Dominion, they are different games with game mechanics in common.

It's perhaps closer to something like, "I'm not going to buy King of Tokyo because they didn't get the actual Godzilla IP so they have generic kaiju instead of licensed ones. UNACCEPTABLE."

I take it you didn't read the slop that was the Dune prequel novels. Embarrassing mediocre cash ins.

And to the original poster:
Cool story bro.
