Is it really necessary? These are everywhere, in all sorts of guises.

I can imagine it filling a niche for a decent playable yet portable edition.

The typical "big box" versions (like this illustration) are annoyingly large and I'd never take it while traveling.

Browsing through the gallery, I see there are various more portable versions.

In real life, the only portable one I've seen (several times) is a small wooden square with small stubby wooden pegs that are placed into cylindrical holes - annoyingly small and awkward to use.

But I don't play it often enough to buy a second set, probably (we got a "big box" version as a gift and play it at home occasionally).

In short, I guess I'm giving a non-useful answer.

Gabriel has sold a portable set which is a folding board/box held closed with magnets. The box is about 7" x 3.5" x 0.75" with room inside for a poker deck in addition to the Othello tokens. The tokens fit snugly into holders, so they don't fall out when you open the box. If you make something similar, which I don't recommend, you should call the game Reversi, which is public domain, as opposed to Othello which is proprietary AFAIK.
