Hello

I consider Dominion is broken. Please prove me I`m wrong.

What happens when you are buying money for gaining victory points only? Have you ever played a game of Dominion in such a way? Because I did and I was very close to victory,so I considered the game to be broken because all of the other cards are of minor importance in determining the winner. I have lost the game because in the final turn I needed only one more "dollar" to buy the last victory point.

What you refer to is known as the "Big Money" strategy, and has been discussed at length previously in the forums. Essentially, it's considered the baseline for good play - the other cards need to be used well, but you certainly buy a lot less of them than new players do. The later, more advanced expansions do a lot to upset Big Money.

Consider a highly simplified version of Dominion, where each turn you roll your "money die" five times. If the sum of your rolls reaches a certain threshold, you get to buy a Province.

Now, the obvious and "Big Money" approach is to add more and bigger numbers to the die by buying Silvers and Golds. But there are other approaches:

* You can eliminate all the low numbers from the die so your average die roll is higher. [Chapel]
* You can find ways to roll the die more times. [Village/Smithy]
* You can add bonuses to your die roll. [Festival]
* You can mess up other people's die rolls. [Witch]
* You can reroll low numbers. [Cellar]
* You can lower the threshold to buy a Province. [Bridge]
* You can skip a turn in order to roll ten times on the next turn. [Tactician]
* You can go for less valuable cards on lower rolls and end the game before a Province player has time to build up points. [Workshop/Gardens]

It's important to note that in most cases you still need to add bigger numbers to your die. Most beginners err at first by buying too many Actions, but then overcompensate by thinking Actions are unnecessary. The best way to get past this hurdle is to experiment with a mix of approaches: buying Silver and Gold, but also buying helper Actions. Eventually you will see that on some boards, Actions dominate, on some boards, Money dominates. But the best strategy is almost always some combination of the two.

It's funny to me how often this comes up, when a new player does this and then decides the game is broken. There's got to be a post like this every few months at least.

A number of forums have already been linked to earlier, so I'm not going to try to directly answer the accusation that Dominion is broken. Instead, let me point out that this game did not come out last week. It has been on sale for over three years and has been played by at least thousands of players. It's currently in the top 10 here on BGG. If the game truly was broken by such a simple strategy, it would have been cast aside long ago and certainly not be as highly rated as it is. Such details should certainly be considered when claiming the game is broken.

Of course, not everyone will like the game and that's fine, even expected. But I think if most players give the game some time to explore the mechanics and the different cards, they will find a pretty incredible game.

IIRC, someone said the other day that there had been 5.2 million games on Isotropic. Not bad for a broken game.

That said, one hopes that when the new UI is dlivered, we will get a search system that works, so that only the terminally lazy will post a question like this again. As it stands today, I would nto be surprised to find someone look for threads on this and not find any. After all, if you did not know it is called big money, how successful would your search be?

It is incredible that the OP thinks the game is broken because he discovered a simple strategy and lost playing it.laugh

I had to look up Narwhals after you posted this. Whether it was inadvertent or not, thanks for introducing me to this meme:

Narwhals, narwhals,
swimming in the ocean,
causing a commotion,
because they are so awesome

Narwhals, narwhals,
Swimming in the ocean
Pretty Big and Pretty White
Can beat a polar bear in a fight

They’re like an underwater unicorn
They’ve got a kick-ass facial horn
They’re The Jedi of the sea
They stop Cthulhu eatin’ ye’

Narwhals, They are narwhals
Narwhals,
Just don’t let em’ touch your balls

Narwhals, they are narwhals
Narwhals,
Inventors of the shish kebab…

Repeat.

I came up with a strategy for soccer: never actually leave your half of the field, just stay on your half and play super-defensively.

I just tried it and lost 1-0, which is close, so offense pretty clearly isn't very important in soccer. Soccer is broken.

I say give the OP a break. He could be new to the Geek, new to this style of game, or new to boardgames in general. I love this site, but I have to admit, sometimes it can be a pain to navigate.
