It's a pretty simple question, really. But let's make it a poll.

I voted wood grain, but I would surely love one of those Death Star boards.

I agree, I've seen tons of amazing and creative paint jobs, it really depends on the quality.

I voted for wood grain, too, but it is a very mild preference, probably based on owning a wood grain board. I, too, would love to pick up a Death Star board.

Although I like most painted boards I have see here on BGG, I still voted for wood because to me the painting distracts too much from the game.

I got in everyone's hostile little face. Yes, these are wooden cubes from boardgaming. Yes, I'm comfortable with that. I am enlightened.

I would probably say wood as I love many of the nicely stained ones. Mine is wood over a painting. But, the painted ones look awesome, as well, and if I get a second board, it will be painted.

How do you see the painting if there's wood over it?

I believe he was referring to his preference for a natural wood board over a painted one.

Generally, I would say wood although a painted one can be very nice and it really depends on the a) quality of the paint job and b) the significance of the design to the user. In other words, there are likely painted designs that I would, all other things being equal, prefer to a stained wood board, but if I were getting one sight unseen I would want the natural one.

I've seen the many painted designs and some are beautiful, some simple, others distracting. A painted board certainly looks better than a natural wood board when hanging on the wall. For my own board, I like the look of the natural wood. Also, if one ever wants sell of the board, a painted board can be harder to sell depending on the picture. Definitely a personal preference but I am surprised the poll has such low supporters for painted boards so far.

How about Wood Veneer or Multipiece boards:

These are all gorgeous designs:

Hilinski:
* Jubilee
* Indiscretion
* Northstar

Joel Harper aka The Puzzler:
* Rosewood & Walnut Inlay
* 16 puzzle-jointed slices of American Walnut and Maple

Painting over beautiful woodwork is a crime on the order of talking at the theatre.

If I was getting a painted board, I'd have to know it was MDF or cheap plywood underneath in order to sleep at night.
