Next meeting of the Ottawa Games Group is this Wednesday, March 21st, 2012.

If you are coming, I invite you to list the specific games you are bringing below.

As well, if there is something you would like to see or something you would like someone else to bring feel free to request it here.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME.

If it your first time straying beyond Hasbro and Parker Brothers board games there are some great teachers here to help make it easy.

Please Remember $2.50 goes to the Legion.
Please remember no hats in the Legion out of respect for the fallen.

We start around 6:30.
We usually go until 9:30 or 10:00pm.

------------------------------------
Question of the Fortnight

What is the longest rulebook you ever read for a game?

------------------------------------

LOCATION
The address is:
Canadian Legion Branch 480 - Westboro, 389 Richmond Road, upstairs.

Google maps:
http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=r...

Please bring $2.50 for the Legion.
Please remember on Wednesday nights the Legion serves food downstairs.

--------------------------------

MEMBERSHIP IS OPTIONAL - BUT CAN HAVE IT'S PRIVILEGES!

Membership provides discounts at local retailers through a membership card system.

There are two options:
1. $5.00 to Steve Larkin in Kanata. This entitles you to the cards
2. Prepay 3 weeks for the Legion (3 X $2.50 = $7.50)**. This entitles you to the cards and provides three weeks of dues to the Legion.
**Looks like it is still $7.50.

Recommendations are as follows:
If you are going to play at the Legion at least twice, I would do the prepay.
However, if you are in the west end and do not plan to go to the Legion, I would just pay the $5.00 to Steve at KGG.
Steve goes by srlarkin on BGG.

Just geekmail or ask at a session if you are interested in the membership discount cards.

I'm bringing Rex, in case anybody wants to give it a try. Might be a long one, tho.

I have played Rex twice now and both games ended in the 2nd round. So the only thing that took a bunch of time was teaching it to 4 new people each time we played, and we only played it 6 players. Super fun tho, alliances are super important to a quick victory. A super fun game for sure!

My girlfriend and I are planning to come this week. In principle, we could bring anything you see here (we're open to requests), but we'd be most likely to bring Ninjato (Euro), Ascending Empires (AT?), and/or 1812: The Invasion of Canada (War).

I'd love to try Rex. Might work better if we can get a group to start a little early like 5:30pm if we can.

Oh, I would also love to try steam, 18xx or a serious train game as my only train game experience is TTR.

Question of the Fortnight

What is the longest rulebook you ever read for a game?

------------------------------------

I'm sure it wasn't the longest rule book, but I read Death Angel's 31-page rule book 4 times before I deciphered how to play the game (so approximately 124 pages of reading). Meanwhile, it's a pretty simple game that takes me less than 5 minutes to explain, assuming I'm there to set it up. The rule book was written in a "choose your own adventure" style; e.g. "Blah blah blah (see page 25). Blah blah blah (see page 17). Blah blah blah (see page 21)." I don't know why they couldn't just write "This is how you play a typical turn: do these things in this order" followed by "and here are some details you'll need to know when something out-of-the-ordinary occurs."

Two weeks ago, some people (I completely forget who!) expressed interest in learning Mage Knight, which is a fantasticly good game (quickly becoming my favourite game ever, without exaggeration). I'll be bringing it along and teaching. Train games are also excellent!

Because Fantasy Flight doesn't feel right about its games until at least thirty FAQs have been published. The most frequently asked of the questions being "So, how do I play this...?"

(Seriously, FF, love your games, but hire some technical writers or something...)

If you guys don't mind teaching it to n00bs, my girlfriend (and possibly her friend) would like to try Power Grid. I'd be interested in learning, too, if I'm not occupied with 1812.

Judging by the thumbs, I'd gather Halden and I are both ok with it.

If time permits, I'd like to get in on that game of Ninjato, too.

yeah I am OK with some new players. This will only be my second go at it but I am sure we will be fine. Assuming there AP isn't too bad.

I'd be interested in playing Commands & Colors and 1812. I'd probably prefer 1812 because I've wanted to see it for a while but either would be just fine with me.

Unfortunately we didn't pack Ninjato this morning, so unless Michelle goes home and gets it, we won't have it with us. shake

We are bringing 1812: The Invasion of Canada (which I played solo last night to refresh my memory) and JAB: Realtime Boxing (in case there are two people waiting to play something else) -- and we'll have Cargo Noir with us, as an OGGer/BGGer GMed me about it.

I was planning to stop at home before making my way there...can bring my copy if it interests anyone.

All are welcome to have a look at my collection in case something else is of interest.
