"The most bloodthirsty amateur strategist the world has ever know."

Hitler, speaking of Churchill, 1941

Here's a slightly different and more complete version:

"He [Winston Churchill] is the most bloodthirsty or amateurish strategist in history . . . For over five years this man has been chasing around Europe like a madman in search of something that he could set on fire. . . As a soldier he is a bad politician and as a politician is an equally bad soldier. . . The gift Mr. Churchill possesses is the gift to lie with a pious expression on his face and to distort the truth until finally glorious victories are made out of the most terrible defeats. . . Churchill, one of the most hopeless dabblers in strategy, thus managed to lose two theaters of war [in Yugoslavia and Greece] at one single blow. In any other country he would be court-martialed . . . His abnormal state of mind can only be explained as symptomatic either of a paralytic disease or of a drunkard's ravings."

Adolf Hitler
Speech to Reichstag in Berlin May 1941

"Dogs, would you live forever?"

Frederick the Great, exhorting his retreating troops at the Battle of Kolin (18 June 1757), probably apocryphal, alas.

I imagine myself muttering "I'll be happy to get past this afternoon" as I retreat on past.

It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.

Yes, I'd say that a good number of such quotes say a lot about the people who said them.

Or, if you prefer:

"Come on you sons of bitches! Do you want to live forever?"

--Master Sgt. Dan Daly, USMC, at Belleau Wood

We may never know if he said that; the evidence for it is of reasonable quality, and Allan Millett's history of the USMC treats it as real. It's certainly real enough for the USMC to carve it into the marble of their spiffy museum at Quantico.

Lord Raglan was the Commander of the British Forces in the Crimea in 1854. His last military command had been at Waterloo. He woke one morning and started walking around the camp. Upon seeing his French allies he cried with great alarm, "The French are among us!!!"

Not really a military quote and not really by a military man, but applicable in many military situations:

"On the plains of hesitation lie the blackened bones of countless millions who at the dawn of victory lay down to rest, and in resting died."

"The conduct of war resembles the workings of an intricate machine with tremendous friction, so that combinations which are easily planned on paper can be executed only with great effort.

The free will and the mind of the military commander, therefore, find themselves constantly hampered, and one needs a remarkable strength of mind and soul to overcome this resistance. Many good ideas have perished because of this friction, and we must carry out more simply and moderately what under a more complicated form would have given greater results."

-Carl von Clausewitz
