Seems like every time I log into BGG these days, I've got about four new videos in my subscriptions, and half of these are unboxing videos. "Here's me tearing off the shrink-wrap . . . here's me slowly lifting off the cover - no box-fart yet . . ."

I guess I just don't get why people want to watch these. Is it a sort of vicarious fulfillment, like a striptease video? "Hey, I don't get to play with these bits, but at least I get to see them!"

Seriously, though, could someone explain the phenomenon to me? Do you enjoy watching unboxing videos, and why?

I am no help. I don't enjoy unboxing videos at all.

However, if a game has been hyped based on its awesome components, I could see a video taking a careful look at them to see if the hype is deserved or not.

Most of the time, though, I couldn't be less interested in unboxing videos. But, hey, your mileage may vary. There are certainly a lot of them, so there must be significant interest out there.

I couldn't imagine enjoying an unboxing video—unless it had this musical accompaniment:

It's absolutely the easiest kind of video to make. You don't need any insight, teaching ability, or even to know how to play the game. Just show the pieces and call it a day. And, you get geek gold for it.

It's a very strange meme, and I can't fathom why it is so popular. I watched half of one a year or so back, and that was more than enough for me.

I think a "boxing up" video would be more useful. Darn games never fit back in the box

That does require a bit of skill though, doesn't it? It would be fun to see a competition for who can put Earth Reborn back into the box the fastest though.

It might be more fun to take a huge came like Twilight Imperium, 3rd Edition and shoot a movie of someone just dumping all the pieces randomly into the box. Then, wait to see how many thumbs he receives, or how many death threats and screams come from the audience.

It confuses me a bit as well. Though one came in handy the other day.

My copy of War of the Ring (first edition) 2nd Edition was missing a Gollum figure. I had wondered if it fell out of a bag as I opened it or something and I just missed it. But I watched an unboxing video and saw that Gollum came in his own little baggie that I *know* I didn't see. So I knew it was just missing and not misplaced.

If Tom Vasel ever reviews TI3 that would happen at the beginning of the video! In fact, I think people actually have gotten a bit up in arms about some of the games he's dumped out in his reviews. Quite humorous if you ask me.

unboxing has its place. There is one guy that does a review of the quality of production not on the game play. It is nice to see everything that is suppose to be in the video and if the rules are laid out in an easy to read fashion and the quality of the components, other than that most unboxing videos are about as useful as watching grass die.

It could be useful if you've got all the expansions mixed up. then you know which components belong to a certain expansion or the base game.

True, but to play devil's advocate, wouldn't a parts list do the same thing?

I think that when I first got into the hobby I was much more prone to 'beautiful components' and the like but as I've aged along with the hobby this has become less and less a part of my decision making process when deciding whether to purchase or even play a game.

For whatever reason, I've found that more often than not (this is wholly subjective conjecture), a game with beautiful components is hiding deficiencies in gameplay and experience. If a game's got 'pretty' components my skeptic hat goes on; can't help it. I'm pleasantly surprised once in a while but it's not often enough to warrant change in this, my own axiomatic principle.

So, in a strange way, I find unboxing videos both worthwhile and worthless.

Apparently Rosa got married off last June and popped a sprog in December. The youthful coquettishness of that avatar is no more. You, Sir, are selling us a lie!!!

Not necessarily, I recently acquired Descent JITD and al the expansions. It was all mixed together. It took me a couple of days sorting al the components. Most where named in the list in the rulebook (not even every component). But there were a lot of components, like boardtiles, which looked a lot like each other with a small different in colour for instance. The rulebook said f.i. 1 boardtile 2x5. But in the expansions they had the same size with another colour.

What's the matter with you? Have none of you heard of game porn before?

That's all it is, plain and simple.

Now, I'm waiting for the one where a scantily-clad, voluptuous woman gets showered in all the counters from Case Blue...

Clipped. of course.

Very funny and poignant observation... I guess it is part of the phenomenon that represents the geekiest sides of the BGG. Someday I suspect there will be a Gamers Anonymous 12 step program developed...
