Hello LOTR enthusiasts!

Has anyone tried working on a variant where the Dark Rider can be used independently of a Sauron player? We love the co-op aspect of the game and wouldn't really want to play 1 vs. all with a Sauron player, but I think that the Dark Rider mechanic is very clever and extremely thematic....

Any ideas? Has anyone already worked on anything like this?

Several people have come up with ways to use the Sauron expansion without needing someone to play Sauron. Here are some threads in this very forum:

Thank you for the links. I've looked through them before, but haven't been satisfied with them in theory...... I think I'm just going to try to play with one of them and see how it is in practice.

Thanks!

Thanks for listing the variants. Mine is the "waddballs-diceless" one. I've tried a couple besides mine, and I think there are plenty of good ideas out there.

Just for perspective, the reason I created mine was that I wanted a variant that felt structurally similar to the "real" game. I've played my variant a half-dozen times now, and while it isn't perfect (Sauron is too dumb), it's better (for me) than the others I've tried. I also wrote a little simulator for it to test the distributions across thousands of games, so it's "stress-tested" to some extent.

Anyway, I encourage the OP to check out all the variants, as they all have pros and cons, depending on what you're really looking for. And sometimes you don't even know that until you try one (which is how I went down my crazy path).

I think I was hoping for something really simple, but that had been tested out like:
Instead of rolling the die on the black symbol, move the rider 2 spaces.

...or something like that

Fair enough. Try your idea a few times, see how it goes, and post The Really Simple Variant.

(FWIW, I find the "rules overhead" of my variant quite small in practice. It's truly just "draw and match" with a few qualifiers.)
