In 1971 I got the new edition with the new professions. I compared every space on the board and every card and evry word of the rules to my 1965 set. Nothing had changed functionally. It was all just graphics and flavor text.

There was a 1980s edition with only six tracks instead of eight. I believe the rules on getting experience cards vary between editions. There may be other minor rule differences.

My comparisons are between 2003 edition (the one I own) and many of them from -60s/70s+...

older versions, when you land exactly on Payday, you get double or 1.5x your salary

Might have been some differences in rules with "bumping"

the boards look very different in the editions, e.g., http://boardgamegeek.com/image/644410/careers vs the picture above. Is that just superficial / formatting?

The picture above is the 6-track 1979 edition. All editions other than that are the same. They have all the same hearts and stars and dollars. I know that some editions give fewer experience cards, but that is the only rule difference I have ever seen.

I was looking into this as well.

I purchased a 76' version and a 71' version and both had the 71' version of the rule book. Did they just throw the 71' version into the 76' version because they printed so many?

1971 is when they changed all the text (Go to Sea became Teaching, etc). 1976 is the same as 1971 except for the colors of the board and the box art. The rules are the same.
