What is Emoticon Zendo? The original Zendo is a logic and reasoning game that can be played using almost any sort of game components: the original game uses plastic pyramids, but the game could also be played using blocks, Legos, coins, words, pictures, gestures, sounds, etc. Here, we play using the BoardGameGeek emoticons and a simplified set of rules which make it easier to play on the BGG forum.
How is Zendo Played? Here's a good overview of the "full" Zendo game: Zendo Quick Rules
To discuss the game, the rules, game etiquette or anything else at all, please use this thread: Emoticon Zendo - Enlightenment, Discussion, Banter, Ideas and New User Questions
To see a list of past and current Emoticon Zendo games, see the Emoticon Zendo Wiki. (Everyone is encouraged to keep the wiki page up to date, especially those who master or win a game.)
Emoticon Zendo Rules: - All BGG users are welcome and each "student" starts with one virtual guessing token. - Unlike original Zendo, there is no "mondo" action. There is only "master" and attempting to guess the rule. - To play, simply reply to this thread with either a koan (a string of emoticons) or a guess--or both a koan and a guess. - If you post a koan and a guess simultaneously, you may make a "conditional guess" by offering one guess that will apply if your koan has the buddha-nature and a different guess that will apply otherwise. - There are no turns, but no one student may do "master" (asking about a koan) two consecutive times (i.e. he must wait for another student to do "master" in between), unless 24 hours have passed without another student doing a "master". - A student may "guess" the rule twice consecutively only if there was a "master" from another student and at least an hour has passed since the first guess. - A student may do a "master" and then make a guess consecutively. - As a courtesy to other students in the event that your guess is correct, please enclose your guesses in [o][/o] (spoiler) tags. - The null koan is allowed in Emoticon Zendo. Use the word "null" to indicate a koan with no emoticons. - Your first guess is free. Additional guesses cost 1 GeekGold (except see below). The GG should be submitted as a tip to this thread. The student with the first correct guess (the winner) will win all the GG as a prize. - If you have already made at least one guess and more than 48 hours has passed since your last guess, then you may make another guess without paying the 1 GG fee. - Please thumb the main thread if you participate. - It is customary that the student who reaches enlightenment on this game becomes the Master for the next game. If unable or unwilling to perform that function, please signal the Master of this game. - Particularly if you Master a game, the Spock Rule gives great guidance about what should (and should not) be part of an acceptable Zendo rule. - If a game seems to be causing the students excessive difficulty, the Master may offer hints and/or suspend any or all of the normal waiting periods. - "Buddha" is not spelled "Buddah".
Emoticon Zendo Conventions: - Koans are built from a single line of emoticons. No letters/numbers/etc. - The 2nd emoticon from the left is in 'position #2', etc. - The Master will use and to mark whether or not koans have the buddha-nature, so please don't use these emoticons in your koan.
Here is an example of a koan of length 4 which has a smiley face in position #3:
