If playing with less than 6 it is possible for an animal to have 2 dominance at the start? For example if mammals and reptiles were both not picked/assigned, insects and birds would have dominance on desert and mountain respectively.

Am I reading it right?

Not only that, but if you go with the random set up, it's possible for one player to have no dominance markers *and* no cubes on the board. That happened in one of our games and that player still won. So, it's not a game killer.
