We are once again collecting games to give to the needy at the holidays (and also giving away some gamer games to participating BGGers) as we did last year (see 2010 Charity Game Drive).
Discussion Thread: 2011 Charity Game Drive -- Discussion Thread
Geeklist: 2011 Charity Game Drive -- Geeklist
If you get a kick out of providing a game anonymously to somebody else, please consider donating a game to one of the kids mentioned below.
I am the coordinator for a game group that meets monthly (see Des Moines, IA: Community Game Night ). Several times a year we do something to help support the local food pantry (see Food Pantry ). With the holidays approaching, we are collecting games to give to the kids of patrons of the food pantry. Here is where you come in. Please consider donating a game to this Game Drive. I am fairly confident that most of the gamers on here have a spare game or two that will never hit the table. Ever. This would be a great opportunity to 1. Help somebody else in need. 2. Clear some space on your game shelf to make room for all the latest Essen releases. 3. Get a tax deduction (the food pantry is a registered 503c and will be happy to provide a receipt--please put a note with your full name and mailing address in your box asking for one if you need it). 4. Win a free game (or expansion) that you would actually play.
Please send your donated games to Westview ATTN: Game Night Coordinator (Mike) 1155 SE Boone Drive Waukee, Iowa 50263
(Please ship all items so that they are delivered prior to 12/08/11 which requires significant lead time around the holidays). (Or bring them in person on 12/10/11).
Obviously, do NOT send your new copy of Space Hulk (third edition). The receivers of these games are not your standard BGGers, but rather the general public. Most of the families receiving games will probably have young kids so games like Candy Land, The Game of Life, Monopoly, Risk as well as Apples to Apples, Smarty Party!, and Say Anything would probably be great choices. And almost anything that was ever sold at ToysRus, Target, or Walmart would work and I am guessing that almost anything in the Children's Game, Trivia, and Party Game categories would work (but do not feel limited to these titles or categories--feel free to expand on this list). Maybe some gateway games would be good, but Le Havre and Agricola would probably be under appreciated.
New games in shrink are preferred, but gently used games in good shape are fine also (just use your good judgement -- if you would be pleased to receive a game in the condition of the ones that you are donating then others probably would too), but please please please make sure that the games are complete (I do not have time to inventory).
Thank you for your generous support. For anybody that would like to participate but would rather send cash, I will be glad to use the cash to buy games locally to donate on your behalf.
Note: If anybody does donate Space Hulk (third edition), Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization, Steam, Agricola, 18EU, etc. we will probably auction it off here to raise funds. If anybody donates cash, gift cards, etc. we will use the funds to either buy games or buy food to donate.
Three ways to WIN:
While this effort is more about the giving than receiving, I thought that it might be nice to reward those that donate. So,
1A. Quarriors! - The person that donates the best lot of games will win a free copy of Quarriors!. "Best" is subjective and the winner will be at my sole discretion; however, it probably ends up just being the person that donates the largest number of usable games. (You do not have to post the list of games that you are donating to the GeekList to be eligible to win the prize, but I think that everybody would enjoy seeing all the things donated. You will need to make sure to include something in the box that you ship so that I will know who to credit for the drawing).
1B. Let's make this one more interesting. If the discussion thread 2011 Charity Game Drive -- Discussion Thread and the Geeklist 2011 Charity Game Drive -- Geeklist both get at least 300 thumbs before 12/10, then I will add any GeekGold that gets tipped to the discussion thread to the prize pool for the winner of the "best donation" award.
2. Hive - Every single person that donates at least one usable game will be eligible for a random drawing with the winner receiving Hive. (You do not have to post the list of games that you are donating to the GeekList to be eligible to win the prize, but I think that everybody would enjoy seeing all the things donated. You will need to make sure to include something in the box that you ship so that I will know who to credit for the drawing).
3. Gang of Four - Evangelizer Award: Every single person that a. posts a comment to the 2011 Charity Game Drive -- Discussion Thread with your favorite board game from your childhood AND b. forwards a request/sends an email to at least one friend or posts a tweet/posts a message on Facebook to ask people to review the geeklist and consider donating,... ...will be eligible for a random drawing with the winner receiving Gang of Four, but only if the Discussion Thread and the Geeklist both get at least 300 thumbs then. (That's right - you can win a good game without even donating one if you just help get the word out about this effort). Obviously, this will be on the honor system--so as soon as you have notified at least one other person about this effort, click the thumb button for the Geeklist 2011 Charity Game Drive -- Geeklist and click the thumb button for the Discussion Thread: 2011 Charity Game Drive -- Discussion Thread. (You must must thumb both to be eligible as well as posting a comment with your favorite childhood board game).
Although there is no requirement to post what you are donating to this geeklist, it might be fun for everybody to see what is being donated.
Please use the discussion thread for all comments and only use the Geeklist to post what you are donating.
Thanks.

Unfortunately, the food pantry cannot pay for your shipping. So, I am asking you to both donate games and to pay for the shipping of those games. (Partially why there are some prizes for generous donors). Alternatively, and even better, would be for you to donate some games and bring them in person to our December game night (and play some games while you are there).

I applaud your groups effort. I plan on donating some games to the Sunday Breakfast Mission in Wilmington, Delaware now after reading your post.
Thank you, best of luck.
As I am a former Iowan exiled to Delaware, I know the hearts of midwesterners are big.

Congratulations!
Kidding! As a Nebraskan, I'm well aware that Iowa is just Nebraska with Casinos and Titty Bars. Still, you got out of the Midwest, something I've been trying to do since I moved here in '86.

The second weekend of every month, we get a group of 50-75 people to play games in a hotel next to the Mall of America in Bloomington. If you wanted to make the journey up for a night, you could play some games and probably head home with a car full of games.

If I can make it over for December I'll try to bring a few more games.
My favorite game growing up was Risk. I would set it up on my bedroom floor and play it by myself...

I am very pleased to once again give back to those that may not be able to afford a board game for Christmas. I grew up on board games and some of them were donated by charities like this one. My childhood game was Clue Master Detective. It brought back many memories of my cousins and I playing every weekend and it continues to be a favorite I have taught our boys. I hope some of our donated games gets others interested and creates a future gamer.

Thank you. You guys are always so generous with everything that you do. And it is much appreciated. Especially this year. It looks like it has been a tough year for BGGers. We have historically had a much larger response. So, thank you again.
(And really thanks to everybody that has donated so far and to everybody that plans to donate.)
