BoardGameGeek » Do It Yourself » "Battle for Dune": A Dune-themed remake of "Game of Thrones"

Author: mandark
The planet Arrakis, also known as "Dune" - land of sand, home of the spice "melange". The spice controls the empire and whoever controls Dune, controls the spice.

The spacing guild has proposed a challenge to the houses of the Landsraad: "The house that produces the most spice will control Dune. There are no set territories, and no rules of engagement."

Vast armies have arrived. Up to six houses fight for control of Dune: the noble Artreides, the insidious Ordos, the evil Harkonnen, the imperial Corrino, the technologic Vernius and the powerful Moritani.

Only one house will prevail.

The "Battle for Dune" begins....NOW!

------------------------------------------------------------------

"Battle for Dune" is a boardgame designed and constructed by myself. It is a 1:1 remake of the boardgame "Game of Thrones", including its two expansions "Clash of Kings" and "Storm of Swords". Except for the overall setting, (character-)names, terminology and imagery, everything is the same as in the original. The only things not "converted" are:

- all House-Cards except for the ones included in the "Storm of Swords"-expansion (since imho you dont't really need the others).
- the holding cells and claim-tokens from the "Storm of Swords"-expansion (as they are not really needed).

Here are some terms, that have been changed for the "Dune"-version of the "Game of thrones":

Miscellanous:
"Westeros" => "Dune"/"Arrakis" (obviously)
"Power" => "Spice"
"Sea" => "Open Desert"
"Supply-Barrels" => "Windtraps"
"Towns" => "Sietches"
"Power-Icons" => "Spice-Harvester"

The Houses:
"Bratheon" => "Corrino"
"Stark" => "Atreides"
"Lannister" => "Harkonnen"
"Greyjoy" => "Ordos"
"Tyrell" => "Vernius"
"Martell" => "Moritani"

Armies:
"Footman" => "Infantry"
"Knight" => "Tank"
"Siege Engine" => "Siege Tank"
"Ship" => "Carryall"

Commands:
"Raid" => "Sabotage"
"Consolidate Power" => "Harvest Spice"

etc...

For the design i used imagery and terminology from various Dune-sources (the Lynch-movie, TV-series, PC-games, collectible card game, books, encyclopedia) as well as the web (images.google.com, wikipedia, etc.).

Overall i designed 2 distinct gameboards (conversions of the AGOT- and the SOS-boards), as well as the gameboard-overlay for 6 players (as in "Clash of Kings"), 163 distinct card-motives and 69 distinct motives for the several game tokens.

Everything is designed with high resolution (300dpi). The 2 gameboards are 50x75cm big.

For the construction, all material was printed out via an online photo-print-service. The front- and back-views of the cards were just glued together. The gameboards and front- and back-views of the tokens were glued on cardboard an cutted out.

The various army-types were "carved" out of the army-tokens of an old "Risk"-boardgame.

Here are some pictures of the final game:

The full 6-player game-setup of "Battle for Dune"

The full 4-player game-setup of "Battle for Dune"

The game-cards of "Battle for Dune"

The game-tokens of "Battle for Dune"

The vast armies of "Battle for Dune" (carved out of the army-tokens of an old "Risk"-boardgame. You can see the 3 types of the original tokens at the bottom of the image.)

if anyone is interested in creating his/her own version, i have the following download-packages of the material available:

- english version
- german version
- french version (translated by BGG-user janosch)
- PSD-files of the game-material to create your own translated or modified versions

just send me a geekmail, and i'll reply with the download-links.

Awesome idea, if they want to re-release dune and un-theme it, we should respond by dune theming everything!!!

in the base game, the fremen are the equivalent of the wildlings. and in the "Storm of Swords"-version they are available as an ally.

i would gladly upload all the stuff here on BGG or somewhere else. but however i'm not so sure if this is a good idea, since i've been using a lot of copyrighted material. any advice on this (maybe from the BGG-moderators)?

another thing is, that everything is designed in german language ATM. but i could also make an english version, if it is wanted.

since everything is in high resolution (300dpi), the stuff is also very big (about 120MB in toto). question is: is there a way to upload such big files on BGG? or maybe rapidshare or something like that would also be a possibility.

My advice: if you are not making any profit from the images and just uploading the files, I see no problem with it. And yes, I would very much like an English version. This is a wonderful idea and I think it represents an evolution in what the original Dune game was. I own it and have played it several times and love the books and setting.

As far as file size, I would simply convert the cards, board and rules to Adobe .pdf files that would print out as one big file you could zip. .pdf files are great ways to economize on image size and are much easier to print out. That way you could split up the board into sections that would print on 8.5" x 11" paper, which is U.S. standard size, or maybe on A4 which I think is Euro standard size.

I look forward to seeing this in English in downloadable form!

I agree. You are not making any money with it and everything is available on line.
I would be very happy to make a french version. I would suggest that you upload the psd files or a text free version, with text in a separate word file.
Anyway, this is an excellent idea and the final results seems incredible. Great job !

thanks again to everyone for the nice feedback, and also thanks for your thoughts on the copyright-question!

i've decided to make the material downloadable over BGG or some other server. right now i'm working on PDF-versions of all the stuff in both german and english language. front- and back-views of cards and tokens will come on approximately 40 A4-sheets (8.5" x 11"). the 2 gameboards will be 50cm x 75cm (19.69" x 29.53").

as i said before, the whole package will be quite big (about 80-100 MB). does anybody know if i can upload such big files here on BGG?

Sabbat wrote:

hi sabbat! the problem is, that the psd-files of all the cards, that would require translation, are in toto about 1 GB big. the gameboards also have a size of 500MB. which makes uploading a bit difficult. one possibility would be to send you the psd-files with only the text included. you could then translate the text, and send the files back to me. i could then make a french package.

What about the worms, though? Are those handled through the Arrakis cards, or is there some other mechanism.

Seriously great job there. If Fantasy Flight can get the rights to make a Dune board game, I wouldn't be surprised if they did try to purchase your design so they could produce it. I know there are plenty of Dune fans that would buy it just for the Dune name alone.

yes, the worms only appear through an arrakis (=westeros) card. it is called "Wormsign" and is the equivalent to "Feast for Crows", where no "Harvest Spice" (="Consolidate Power")-Orders may be played during the next round.

an official "Dune"-version of AGOT would definitely rock, but purchasing and selling my design is not really an option for FFG, since i used a lot of copyrighted imagery. FFG would at first have to buy the rights to those images, to use them in their product.

but anyway, making money has never been a goal of this project, and it still isn't.

(Okay, it was cheap, too. And I thought about buying it years ago...)

I personally would prefer to give Atreides the Green (or maybe black) colour and Harkonnen babyblue (with a Griffin Logo) like in the books and let the Ordos out of the game, but this is only my personal opinion.

Great Job!

yes, i thought that questions about inconsistencies with the original books might arise. however, i'm a big fan of the PC-strategy games by westwood (dune2, dune2000, emperor), and i mainly wanted to create a boardgame-version of these. so the house-colors, -insignias and even some characters are taken from these games.

Dune Session

I had the honor to be among the first to play "Battle for Dune". As a great fan of both Westeros and Dune I really enjoyed it. What I found most amazing is how perfectly the direct conversion from AGOT into the Duniverse worked - including leaders, cities/sietches, spice harvesting, allied parties (Guild, Smugglers, Fremen) etc...
I especially love the Storm of Swords expansion for the 4-player game, with Stilgar starting as an allied leader for the Atreides (as Black Walder for Stark) and with Duke Leto being a prisoner of the Harkonnen, (just like Eddard is for Lannister).
The quality of the design greatly adds to the gaming atmosphere, and the map is really well-arranged to keep a godd strategic overview.

I hope some of you will join the battle over Dune soon and share some of this great gaming experience.

Luthien wrote:

the purpose of my version was only to make a different "theme" for AGoT, and to leave all rules and game-dynamics untouched.
changing the map-layout, rules and other things would also influence the balance and would require a lot of play-testing.

Very impressive job.
I'll go against the crowd, though, and advise you to keep this as confidential as you can. FFG might not be to happy to see a direct competitor to its boardgame for free of the internet (after all, it's an exact copy of the mechanics, even the board is unchanged, only the theme differs). But the Herbert heir is known to be ruthless when it comes to protect and control the Dune Intellectual Property, and you could get in trouble if they ever find out about this boardgame.

There are many full game conversiond for free around and noone has yet done any significant steps to remove the. Also, if only images yet available on internet were used, I see no problem with this, as it's yet online.

I say, go for it. There should be no problem. And if, you can anytime simply remove it.

hi everyone!

i wanted to announce, that i'm in the process of incorporating the changes of the "a game of thrones - second edition" into the "Battle for Dune"-retheme. i'll again make 2 packages (english and german) available for anyone, who is interested.

i don't know, when i'll be done, but i think 1-2 months at most is a good guess.

hi airbrush!

airbrush wrote:

regarding your questions:

airbrush wrote:
how long does such a project take?

hmm, this was my first retheme and i wasn't so experienced in graphics design then. i guess i spent about 250 hours on planning the conversion and designing all the stuff and about 30 hours on the actual construction (this was also the first PnP-game i constructed).

airbrush wrote:
How much experience is needed to do this type of thing?

well, first of all you need experience in graphics-design. i worked with Photoshop and Illustrator. the more experience you have, the better and nicer stuff you can do.

airbrush wrote:
What was the hardest part to convert?

there are a lot of similarities between the "Duniverse" and the "AGOTiverse", so a lot of analogies came to mind very easily. it's the details that often are not so easy. e.g. finding characters for all the housecards was a bit of the problem, because while the main Dune-houses (Atreides, Harkonnen and Corrino) have a good set of well known characters (incl. images), the lesser known houses did not.

at the beginning, i also put a lot of thought into the conversion of the sea-areas, as of course there are no seas on Arrakis (at least at that time ). my first idea was to make the sea-areas the actual air-spaces of the country-areas to which they adjoin. and thus "fold" them over the countries. i even made my first board-prototype this way, but in the end it was far too confusing, which is bad for such a stretegic game. maybe when we can create 3d-hologram-games i'll get back to that idea.

so i took the easier road to simply convert the sea-areas to "open desert"-areas, where only aircrafts can fly. of course this solution is a bit illogical, because why shouldn't aircraft also fly over the country-areas?! but the map is far clearer this way and i was able to almost convert the AGOT-map 1:1.

but as you can see: a lot of work on a retheme is the "brain-work" of thinking about the best conversions and analogies, and not only doing the actual designing.

the included Dune Cards (=Westeros Cards) are the one from the "Storm of Swords" expansion, which did not have any "Winter is coming"-cards.

Another build related question: I want to make the oval map. Do I need to make both the 4 player and the 6 player maps? Rather, can four players play on the 6 player map? I want as versitile board as possible, but don't want to make two seperate boards if I can help it.

the "round" 4-player map is the one from the "Storm of Swords"-expansion, which was in fact more of a seperate game, than an expansion. however, all new additional gameplay-elements (e.g. leaders, tactic-cards, etc.) can be used with the base-game, except the ally-cards.

the "oval" 5-player map is the one from the basic "A Game of Thrones"-game (1st edition). it can be played with only 4 players (1 house is just left out), but i guess every AGOT-player would definitely recommend the "Storm of Swords"-board instead of that.

for playing with 6 players, you need the "overlay" for the 5-player-map, which was originally part of the "Clash of Kings"-expansion for 1st-edition-AGOT.

the "round" 4-player map from the "Storm of Swords"-expansion is imho not only superior to playing the 5-player basegame, but also a quite different experience.

so in short, i would definitely recommend printing both maps, although it is not necessary for 4-player games.

i printed both maps and glued them on both sides of the same cardboard, so i got the best of both worlds, with almost no additional storage needs.

Hi mandark,

Is the game totally translated from Game of Thrones? Does it mean we can use the rulebook exactly the same in Game of Thrones simply by substituting the houses with the Dune factions? Thanks.

hi lawrence!

yes, that's true. only the design and names/terms are translated. the rules are the same. the readme-file, which comes with the download-packages, includes a list of many terms and names of the original AGOT game and their corresponding translation in the dune-retheme. with these in mind, you can totally use the original rulebooks.

Hello Mandark,

Recently I was introduced to the 'a Game of Thrones' boardgame. Fortunately after a search on BBG I stumbled upon this thread. I'm so impressed by your conversion of aGoT to the Dune universe. What effort and quality!
As a huge fan of the Dune novels, I'd be grateful receiving the download URL for the English version.

Thanks in advance!

Any news about your second edition of "Battle for Dune" ?

What about the French translation, has anyone started something ? I would be glad to help.

hi everyone!

sorry for the late reply, but i was on vacation.

regarding the hold-up of 2nd-edition related changes to "Battle for Dune":
on the one hand i was quite busy - partly due to working on another boardgame-retheme (more info coming soon ) - and on the other hand i wasn't quite sure for a while, which changes i should incorporate.
but i'm happy to announce, that i have the new package ready.

first of all i should mention, that i kept the 1st edition map-layout for the oval 5-player map and the usage of an overlay to transform it into the 6-player map from the 2nd edition (which is almost identical to the 6-player map from COK).
this is because i think the 1st edition map is very well balanced for 5 players in contrast to the usage of additional neutral force tokens with the 6-player map as with the 2nd edition, which was critizised a lot for not being properly balanced.

here are the changes from the old version:

- 9 fremen-cards (=wildling-cards) from 2nd-edition-AGOT instead of the 5 from (SOS) Storm of Swords
- power-2-garrison-token for each of the 6 houses on the classic "oval" 5-6-player board in addition to the already existant garrison-token from SOS
- the 2nd edition house-cards in addition to the SOS house-cards (you can choose yourself, which ones to use. but i would recommend using the SOS house-cards when playing with the round SOS-board and/or playing with leaders.)
- victory track on the oval 5-6-player-board and victory-token for all 6 houses
- the start-cards of the oval 5-6-player-board now reflect the start-setup of 2nd edition AGOT (changes are: power-2-garrisons in each homearea and 1 Ordos-carryall is now in the airbase instead of both carryalls already in the desert).
- the dune-cards now correspond to the westeros-deck of 2nd edition AGOT
- several design-related changes

what i didn't incorporate from the 2nd edition was:

- the "Tides of Battle" cards, because i don't really like the additional luck-element they add to the game.
- the neutral garrison token needed when playing with less than 6 players, because i still use the balanced 5 player-map from the 1st edition (as mentioned above)

the package is once again available in german and english language, as well as a translation-package to translate the material to other languages.

i've just geekmailed the links to everyone who has requested them but hasn't gotten them yet.

have fun, and let me know, if you find any errors!

hi everyone!

i've overhauled the design of both gameboards a bit. in addition to purely cosmetical changes, i've added the "victory-track" to the round gameboard (from "Storm of Swords") too, since i find that very practical.
i would suggest, that anybody who has already downloaded, but not printed the files yet, downloads them again (links are still the same).

After working on this off and on for about a year, and probably 80+ man hours, I give you some pictures!

All the pieces are hand made from wood by a friend of mine, and hand painted by me. All order tokens are 1 inch double sided wooden tokens, and the spice (power) tokens are 3/4ths inch wood. All cards are double sided and in penny sleeves.

I have all the bits in plastic boxes that I found at the Axeman. I LOVE that store.

Set up for a 6 player game.

Everything is laminated and durable. I'm debating cutting it into thirds so I can glue it to a folding board, but it looks SO SHINY! I also have the Storm of Swords board too.

Just so you guys know, even though it is 300+ tokens and 132 units and 150+ cards and is a LOT of work, it is doable.

Very cool project! I'm in and want to assemble one of these!

mandark, please send me the links when you next share them to folks. If it's okay to request the PSD files as well (I like to modify for my printer at home also).

Thank you very much!
