Wassup? Thanks for visiting my profile. I discovered "real" board games around October 2007 through a childhood friend (BGG member: tofuji). Technically, I always was a gamer, but he opened my eyes to a new world of gaming and I have never looked back.
As a child growing up in China, I was always playing games like XiangQi, Chinese Checkers, Go Moku, Go, and Tichu (more like the game it's derived from). At 8 yrs old, I moved to New York and started choosing sports over those games. Never forgot about them, just never had the right people to play with.
Through my teenage years, roll & move games like Monopoly, Risk, Clue, and Solarquest took over the majority of my indoor activities. While card games like Spades and Hearts dominated dorm rooms in college, I nearly stopped playing all types of games once I started working.
With work, I had very limited time for so many different activities available. So I chose sports, television, video games, and hanging out with my friends over any of those games. Instead, the most popular games my friends and I played were party favorites like Cranium, Imaginiff, and Apple To Apple at social gatherings.
Today, hanging out with friends usually involves "real" board games. We meet every Friday night at my house for games and often play until sunrise. It was all due to a game of Blokus that got me and my girlfriend interested, but Carcassonne was definitely the knockout punch. Ever since then, it has become one of my passions along with sports (especially football), food, and music.
I believe I'm a Eurogamer at heart, but I do enjoy almost any kind of game. Half of my game group is made up of girls who enjoy lighter fares, that's why I play games like Ingenious, Bohnanza, Tumblin-Dice, Coloretto, and Qwirkle more than heavier games. I have no problem with it, I just wish I had a chance to play more Eurogames. (Update: our game group has evolved and now play more euros.)
Lastly, I cannot finish my profile without mentioning how lucky I am. I now play games on a regular basis with my
wife, who likes games but is not crazy about it like I am, yet tolerates the fact that our game collection has gone from less than 20 to over 200 in less than 6 months. (Update: now the collection is close to 600 in under 3 years.) At the same time, I also get to hang out with my closest friends every week and enjoy some quality time together.
I truly believe that I will be a gamer for life. And since everyone on BGG likes to relate everything to a number, I have to rate my love of board games a 10/10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
