My friend Patrick introduced me to El Grande back in the late 90s. We had tried a variety of over-produced, poorly thought out games before so I was skeptical even after our first play.
However, over several years, he picked up other games and we started playing more. The first game I bought was Settlers of Catan, but it wasn't until 2007 that board games truly became my hobby.
I am a member of the Topeka Board Gamers and we meet every weekend. The group has a solid core of eight members, all with their own collections. It really is a great group and we sometimes have too many games to get to them all...which is a problem I love to have. Even better, we all have distinct tastes and I get to try games that I would never have thought to buy on my own.
I have since moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana to go to graduate school, and I play games with both the Mad Anthony Gamers and Boardgamers of Michiana. While I still love some Euros, my tastes have been shifting more and more to war games. I never would have guessed five years ago that I would be playing a game like Case Blue
but life is strange that way (even board gaming life).
I have moved back to Kansas but now I am in Atchison of Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe
fame (also home of Amelia Earhart). What looked like a one-year gig is probably becoming permanent. It's nice to be close to family and old friends but also have the opportunity to reach out to other gamers in nearby cities.
My Top 10 is for games I want to play and my Hot 10 is for out-of-print games I am most actively pursuing right now. If you get a hot lead, let me know!Review of my 2012 resolutionsMy 2013 Resolutions
