Howdy guys! Well, it's been years since I fiddled with this profile so I thought I'd give it an update. The picture above is of my wife, Cati, and I. Cati is also my most constant (and patient) gaming partner. We enjoy playing all kinds of things from Antiquity to Zendo. Of course, we don't get to sink our teeth into too many long games after the arrival of our charming son, Owen, last December (2013).
I have been playing games regularly since middle school. My first games were mostly wargames, but over the years I've drifted through a variety of genres and design schools. I tend to enjoy games that are deeply interactive and opaque. Some of my favorites include 18xx games, early Wallace titles, and just about anything Phil Eklund has ever touched.

My research primarily concerns the impact of empire on the 19th century novel and the ways both narrative and technological innovations changed how people understood the world around them.
I enjoy thinking about games and design. When not playing games or on BGG I can probably be found on my bicycle, in a sailboat, or reading a book. I also dabble in game design and have several prototypes floating around.
I've also been known to play around with graphic design and always seem to have a redraw project or poster that I'm working on. Here are some that I'm particularly fond of or are currently in progress:
