Welcome to my humble profile.
Thanks for your visit, and enjoy your stay here!

A special welcome and mb goes to all my thriends¹ on the 'Geek!

¹a term I coined which means thread-friends, i.e. users you have come to know through threads (or the net in general) and have many things in common with, so you might be inclined to call them "friends" without ever having met them in RL, but would most certainly love to!

Some random things about myself

Yep, that's me... mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Name: Daniel, but you can call me Sarge mb
Origin of my username: This was the name I made up for my very first RPG character back in the 90s, a male human Ranger. His full name was Engoduun Agonis.
Birthday: I was born on the very last day of the year nineteen hundred seventy-six.
Occupation: working for a customs broker (import & export) mb
Home: a small apartment in Bremen mb
Marital status: I have a wonderful girlfriend named Carlotta, whom I love very, very much, and who is also a Geek
Current ride: I'm walking... or using my bike.
Hobbies: boardgames, special dice, collecting vinyl and CDs, action figures, some (vintage) computer/video games, RPG stuff, boardgames, books and movies, going to concerts & festivals (Heavy Metal, of course), my battle vest or "Kutte" as we call it in Germany (front + back)
Likes: friendliness, kindness, balance, tolerance, peace
I love: being happy, and making others happy
Favorite game: Hard to say, there are too many great items in my collection, I simply cannot put my finger down and say "This is the one!" - it also depends on my current mood and other factors. Every single item has earned its place.
I'm also interested in: a hearty meal, good wine, german beer, french cheese, whisky, the internet (yeah, I know - Cap'n Obvious), history, languages, obscure knowledge, autumn, fog, long walks, graveyards, nature, philosophy, silence... or take a look at my microbadges way down below.

My gaming history... mb mb mb

When I started about on BGG, I wasn't a gaming noob, but regarding boardgames, especially those of the years 2000 and beyond I was mostly unaware, due to several private reasons...

As a kid I had many games over the years (as you can easily see in my Previously Owned list) which were either sold, traded away or destroyed somehow (y'know, sometimes these things happen, especially with children). Of the first games played I remember Pachisi, Shogi, Connect Four, Reversi and Monopoly.
In my teens I started playing again, this time mostly roleplaying games, but we also played some boardgames as well, like Talisman, HeroQuest or Zambeln, of which I had the latter two myself. Later on came some dry years without gaming (except for Munchkin).

But then - at the beginning of 2009 - I finally managed to get into contact with my gamer friends of the old days again, of the time we had our RPG sessions each weekend! It had been a long time no see for me, and when we finally came together again the old spirit was still there, as if 'twere never gone. All the fond memories welling up again... the rest is history in the making.

Gaming is hot as ever, regular meetings as well, and most of all - I'm having fun! My purse is diminishing with every new discovery I find on BGG, but I'm getting back more than I spend from my friends, and this is what counts!

What got me up and running was the Savage Worlds Roleplaying System!

This is practically the game that renewed my interest in gaming once again. Although being mainly a roleplaying game (which has extensive rules for miniature battles as well), it was responsible for the first step of mine into the large and wonderful world of boardgaming in the new millenium.

As I said in my introduction, our group started as RPG geeks, playing modified versions of Das Schwarze Auge (DSA) (2nd Edition), and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (2nd Edition), plus some others like Plüsch, Power & Plunder (1st & 2nd Editions) or Star Wars (WEG Original Edition) as well.

We did this for many years, then sometime around 1997 or so, I lost contact... bad times, yeah. But more than 10 years later, in 2009, fate brought us together again, the rest of my old group having started Savage Worlds already, and so I joined in again, fascinated by the fantastic possibilities that game system offered!

Since all of us have a job or faculty obligations, there are times when only 2 or three of us can share a play, and what could fit better than some cool boardgames?

Michael (Corran Horn) introduced me to this site in the course of our meetings, and what more can I say? BGG has become my top site on the net, with such lovely people around, and tons of useful and interesting information to find. The geek inside me has finally gotten what he had yearned for all these years! Without this site, my life would be much poorer!

Thank you! I hope to stay here for quite a while!

My gaming tastes: mb mb mb

First and foremost I love the social aspect of gaming together with some friends. It's all about having a good time with good company and you could call it the Dao of Gaming: the way is important, not the goal.

It does not matter which games we play, as long as we enjoy it. Of course I have my preferences as to what kinds of games I like, and these are mostly adventure, fantasy, science-fiction or horror themed games, but I'm always open for new things and certainly won't deny any game I haven't played yet. With some exceptions - like railroad, political, farming games, some party/drinking games, hardcore wargames, most abstracts or games with a religious background - those are just not my type. But apart from that, I love strategical stuff as well as silly over the top filler games, depending on my mood and gaming buddies.

When playing games, the goal should be to play the game, have fun, and socialize with your friends. A good game night is one during which I laughed a lot, felt excited and - whenever possible - created good stories while gaming. Themed games are, of course, best suited for this outcome, but generally almost all games can evolve a story. If you let them and have a huge imagination.

Winning, scoring, all that stuff is of no importance when it comes to having a good time. We're not talking competition here, but games. People often forget that.

Occasionally, when no one else is around, I also like solo games - either to have fun, try out new strategies, or relax.

Doctor Who mb

Okay, I may be a little late to this, but then - with a series about time travel you can never be "late", right?

Admittedly, for quite a while I had never heard about it at all, and, once on the Geek, only sporadically came across references about the Doctor. Being such a long-running series (or the longest of them all), I thought it hard to step into, so I skipped it. But then I got the opportunity to watch it - and was hooked! I've never seen a better series, honestly. Thrilling, exciting, cheesy, educational, frightening, lovely, charming, and whatnot - it's just brilliant!

So I'd consider myself also a Doctor Who fan now! I absolutely love it, the old and the new one, and even though I haven't seen ALL episodes yet, one day I'll get there.

I really dig audio books and productions, so when I was shown this, it was a blast! Pulp fiction, in the vein of old film noir or classic gumshoe stories hit the nail right about the spot for any who are into this kind of entertainment!

I also love old cartoon series! mb

Thundercats mb

M.A.S.K. mb

Those two above are my most beloved!

But there are also many other fantastic series I liked and still do: Batman: TAS, Bravestarr, Captain Future (the german version was, alas, cut, but had the best musical score of all synchronisations!), Cowboy Bebop, Daffy Duck, Danger Mouse, Darkwing Duck, Defenders of the Earth, Disney's Gummi Bears, Ducktales, Dungeons & Dragons, Flash Gordon, Galaxy Rangers, Gargoyles, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Inhumanoids, Inspector Gadget, Iron Man, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, Jonny Quest, Looney Tunes, Lupin III, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Once upon a time... (all spin-offs), Pinky & The Brain, Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs, Sancho & Pancho, Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century, SilverHawks, Spectacular Spider-Man, Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, Spiderman Unlimited, Spiderman, Spiderman: TAS, Star Trek - TAS, Starcom, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Adventures of Tintin, The Animaniacs, The Bugs Bunny Show, The Dream Stone, The Fantastic Four, The Flintstones, The New Yogi Bear Show, The Plastic Man, The Raccoons, The Real Ghostbusters, The Smurfs, The Tick, Thundarr the Barbarian, Ulysses 31, Willy Fog, X-Men, X-Men: Evolution, and many more...

Lately I've also discovered my love for Tokusatsu (live-action series with a heavy focus on special effects)! And while I'm only beginning to wade through the myriad offerings even Japanese kids might be overwhelmed with, here's the one show that started my interest:

Kamen Rider OOO mb

The Kamen Rider series has been around for over 40 years now, with almost 30 different Rider shows as of this writing in 2013.
OOO (read: O's, or Ozu) being the 12th from the Heisei era and a good pick to start with the franchise. Once you get over the bug and animal motif and the weirdness (it's Japanese, what do you expect?) it'll grow on you, trust me. The characters are very cool, we have wonderful villains here, the story is fantastic, and the musical theme... just gorgeous!

Of course it's also a trap. Action figures, roleplay toys and accessories galore. Yeah. And since they're from Japan, that means hefty prices, so... I'm kinda lucky that I won't be spending too much money there. Just some.
