I'm a fan of strategy games and I have an aversion to most traditional party games. A couple of my favorite games are epic Ameritrash style games and complex card games but those exceptions aside, I have a strong bias for games that take less than ~2 hours and are moderate complexity or less. I only have so much time to play and so much room left in my brain for rules! I also like being able to play with family and friends who aren't as interested in gaming. Being a father with young gamers in training, I of course enjoy some lighter stuff and children's games too.
I spent much of my youth playing Stratego
, Axis and Allies
, and Top Secret S/I
. Then in '93 or '94 my cousin Tavis:
introduced me to Magic
which I would play casually but fairly consistently for the next decade.
Eventually, sometime around 2005/2006, he brought over Catan
which I thought was pretty good. Then shortly after my buddy
introduced me to Twilight Imperium
and War of the Ring
. I immediately loved these games and it finally occurred to me that maybe there was more out there. I was shocked that such excellent games had escaped my notice (I wander through the game section at Target fairly often after all). I asked where he was finding these amazing games and that led me to here, where I was sucked into the world of board games.
After a year or two of lurking, I finally joined the site in mid-July 2007. I immediately started logging every face to face game I played and I also plugged in conservative guesses for past plays up until that time. I like keeping track so I know how much use I'm getting out of my collection, it helps curb game buying (as I can easily see how little I've played games I own), and because it is kind of amusing.
