I grew up in the those heady days in the '70s, playing truckloads of really lousy wargames. It didn't bother me much at the time, since I played virtually all of them solitaire. The games I would end up playing with my neighbor, not so coincidentally, turned out to be pretty good games. We played a lot of Titan, Backgammon, the old TSR game Dungeon, etc.
When I eventually went to college, some friends and I obsessively played D&D for years, even planned weekend getaways around it, and generally the only boardgame we'd play was Risk. Needless to say, I never want to play Risk again!
I love a lot of the card based wargames, block wargames, and games which have some concrete theme. But my favorites are Chess and Go, the kings (or queens...) of the abstracts, so go figure. <shrug>
