I am a Canadian/Dutchman with a Russian wife and a Dutch/Canadian son of 8 and a Dutch/Canadian/Russian son of 2.5.
I am currently 35 years and a life-long gamer. When young my brother and I played games all the time, including the usual suspects like Monopoly, Risk, and all kinds of card games.
When I was about 10 I started playing Scrabble regularly with my grandmother, and spent many an afternoon relaxing with her, playing our two-player game. Sometimes we'd play every day!
Later I played Settlers of Catan, Mah Jong, Targui, Machiavelli, Perudo, and other games of the time, around 1998/9 I guess.
But then I left for abroad, living in Russia for 4 years and later in China for another 3. In fact, my Dutch/Canadian/Russian son was born in China! Well, whaddaya know!
Abroad I read about and then saw in the store the wonderful game of Puerto Rico. I didn't get it, holding off. Instead, we got Carcassonne, and played that frequently with visitors, enjoying it a lot, but playing it a little too oftne. Then in the end we picked up Puerto Rico, when in China, where we played it often, enjoying it very much - our then favorite game!
In the last year and a half we've been (back) in Holland, where I started working on my game collection, checking out BGG what to get, and playing as many games as I can. My game collection, one could easily say, has exploded, going from under 10 to nearly 200 games within a year!
Our favorites now are Race for the Galaxy and Through the Ages - wonderful games.
My Top 10 Games list are the games I rate highest.
The Hot 10 games list are different games from the Top 10, and are the games which I am usually dying to play.
