When I was growing up my family played the classic family board games (Monopoly
, Connect Four
, 120s, 500s, and Spades), and some not so classic ones like E.T.
, and Quicksand
In 1995, my third year of University I got hooked on the CCG Magic: The Gathering
. So while some students spent their money on beer, I spent my money on Magic
, and eventually other CCGs like Shawdowfist
. I eventually said enough and stopped buying CCGs do to my insane number of Magic
cards, and switched to computer gaming.
Eventually I left university with my B.Eng Chemical and started working. Once or twice in 1999 I found a few people to play Advanced Civilization
with but I was not yet involved with a real board gaming group and I was content playing PC RPGs like the Might and Magic series
or the Baldur's Gate Series
. I did love those long sessions of Advanced Civilization
though. In 2001 I stumbled upon a group from work that played board games monthly and so I got to try Junta
, A Game of Thrones
and various other games. I still did not buy board games myself.
The PC games eventually became annoyingly frustrating, as it seemed you needed a new system every year to keep up with the latest and greatest games, I believe the last series I played was Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic
. This is about the time I started buying my own board games.
In 2005 I had my first child and was starting my own family so I started gradually playing family and kids games again, now in 2011 with 3 kids I find myself playing all sorts of board games from Go Away Monster
to Twilight Imperium
. I find myself wanting to play as much as I can of whatever I can.
