Part-time game designer : Full-time geek.

40-something who is married to a wonderful woman who indulges my devotion to the hobby and surprises me at every turn when I spring a new game on her.

I got the boardgaming bug from my mother, who used to buy games at garage sales. She amassed quite a collection - almost 500 games - which we almost never played and gave most of them away during a garage sale (Oh how I wish I'd kept some of them after seeing them on the wantlists!). The rest are now in storage waiting on me to go through them. I'm introducing her to Euros, which she is quickly taking a liking to, even though she sometimes complains about complexity before she's bothered playing.

See my game design blog here.

Games in development: (The higher it is on the list, the more work I've done on it.)

1) A pick-up-and-deliver themed around taxis, but using a combination of the card selection systems from Ticket to Ride and Bohnanza to control direction.

2) Trying to base a game off a concept from a Robert Heinlein novel in which property is taxed according to whatever value the owner puts on it. However, doing that allows anyone else to purchase the property outright with no say from the property owner. Properties produce goods that gradually deplete the soil and the crop yield suffers. The seedstock for each region is finite and must be "renewed" by trading in a portion of each crop in the game for new. This resets the crop yield at maximum, and the cycle starts over. Also, each round, players take a role that either allows them to a) collect taxes, b) produce goods, c) sell/trade goods, d) buy property, or e) act as land agent and take a cut of sales of goods and property. I'm also thinking about depleting crops if you don't sell/use any of them during a round. (Edit: I really, really want to make this about brewing beer so you can use bottle caps. A single six-pack gets you customized pieces!)

3) A wooden children's game called "Bell the Cat". Each player has a mouse that drags a cat behind them on a string through a room full of furniture. (Think Tom chasing Jerry) The object of the game is to bell everyone else's cat by sneaking up behind it, then placing a "bell" on the cat piece. Every time your cat gets belled, the string is shortened and your mouse gets to move an additional space - making you and your cat harder to catch. The first person to bell everyone else's cat wins the game. Right now, I'm trying to figure out how to make a modular board that doesn't allow for diagonal movement, but lets you change the arrangement of the furniture in the room. I'm thinking magnets.

4) A game on serial killers where each player blindly chooses a role (killer, cop, victim), then tries to identify and remove pawns that represent the others by moving them in a "move 1 piece closer, move the rest of the pieces further away".

Currently working on:

5) A resource management disaster game where players use finite resources to either try and avert the disaster or get as far away as possible. (i.e. fuel to get away, or to power the machines you need to fix whatever is going to go wrong. Giving more to one lessens the other.) Of course, your ultimate goal is hidden from the other players until the disaster strikes - or doesn't as the case may be. The winner is whoever is the best prepared whatever the outcome. Again, this is still a concept.

Games in playtesting:

4) Petri Wars: Tile-based amoeba pieces that move, grow, and split off. Attack your opponent(s) by evolving faster and/or better than they do. Can you outmaneuver them and wipe them out?

Games completed:

1) Not yet - but soon, I hope.
