is a picture of Bruno Gerussi, an actor who played Nick Adonidas on the Canadian Television show The Beachcombers
]. The Beachcombers
was on CBC television from 1972 to 1990 and is considered a Canadian classic, at least by some. It doesn't have much to do with gaming except that it reminds me of my childhood.A little about me
I live in London, Ontario with my wife and two children. I started playing boardgames as a kid growing up in the 1980s. In those days, Poleconomy
, Shogun (Ikusa
and Axis & Allies
were my favorites. I was introduced to Catan
in 2002 or 2003. Within a couple of years, I had tried Puerto Rico
and The Princes of Florence
. Then I found the 'geek and I've been hooked ever since. Recording Plays
I recorded all of my boardgame plays in earnest for one year. I started on November 1, 2011 and ended on October 31, 2012. I include all complete games played face-to-face, and incomplete games played face-to-face that lasted at least 2 hours (if I didn't include incomplete games, I would never get to record a wargame play
). I did not include games played solo (which I generally only do to learn a game).
During this time I played 179 games. My top five played boardgames were: 7 Wonders (46); Dominion (40); D-Day Dice (12); Kingsburg (8); and Troyes (8). My top five played wargames (or at least games I consider wargames
) were: Space Empires 4X (7); Twiglight Struggle (4); Hannibal (2); Sekigahara (2); and 1989 (2).
It is strange to look back at a year of game playing. I did not play Puerto Rico face to face once (one of my all time favourites). I spent far more money on wargames than I did on light strategy games despite having played light strategy games far more often.Rating Children's Games
If my children enjoy a game and want to play it, I rate it an 8. If they don't, I rate it lower. I think rating a children's game a "1" because it doesn't appeal to an adult is ridiculous. Of course, my rating system is flawed as well, in that a game's rating changes as my children get older and start enjoying different (better - I hope) games.Life Changing GamePuerto Rico
was the game that turned me from a normal human who enjoyed board games into a board game geek who just happens to be human. Once I "got" PR there was no turning back. BGG Contests
I played my 200th BGG contest on January 28, 2014. While I'm batting .000, at least I'm still swinging for the fences!
These days, I primarily play Euros with a weekly gaming group or wargames with a regular wargaming partner.
