got schooled on boardgames by the usual family gaming back in the seventies and eighties on the Pachisi and Spiel des Jahres level.
In the mid-eighties I jumped on the RPG wagon, playing Das Schwarze Auge (German RPG system), Traveller, and a bit of Call of Cthulhu. Another influence were the original Battletech minis system and a year long game of World In Flames, resulting in fond memories for the first and the knowledge that I won't want to try a monster wargame again.
During the early nineties I played less boardgames due to work commitments and satisfied my gaming needs through gaming on my trusty Amiga 500.
In the summer of 1995, Settlers of Catan entered my life through an impulse buy (I originally wanted to buy a super soaker water pistol, but got Settlers instead...). Luckily a play group emerged as well.
Thus fifteen years of Eurogame bliss began. I haven't missed Essen since my first visit in 1996 (o.k., living this close to Essen certainly helped...).
Additionally, after much initial ridiculing of those idiots spending hundreds of Marks on Magic booster packs, the bug got me as well. I entered through Netrunner and then started M:tG as well. My big love however is the Battletech CCG for which I also competed in the 1998 World Championships.
Sadly, life commitments, most importantly two adorable baby girls, reduced my regular gaming to mostly a single 2 player night per week. This led to a heavy flirt with the Warhammer: Invasion LCG (cooling down now) and more recently to a renewed interest in wargames.
Luckily many wargames can be played by email using Vassal. I never looked back and have been in at least five games in parallel ever since...
Dear Santa Grogs,
sorry that my wishlist doesn't contain many recent titles. I'm mostly interested in the stuff listed at wishlist levels 1 and 2, with levels 3 and 4 mostly serving as reminders and leading to occasional impulse buys in case a good opportunity arises and the real-life frustration level is high enough.
However, if you should have a used copy in need of a new home, I'm not too picky and will be happy with less than 'like new' copies as well as long as they come from a smoke and pet free home!
And of course you're welcome to be creative (as long as you don't send stuff I already preordered...
). By the way, I don't participate in the regular/Euro Secret Santa exchange, so the whole wishlist is open to you...
