Wargames: I was introduced to Avalon Hill in 1971, and about two years later learned of SPI. I played a lot of wargames throughout the 1970s, and had another spurt in the years around 1990 when I found a group of like-minded gamers. For the past decade I haven't wargamed much -- too much Eurogaming -- but lately I've been desperate to make up for lost time.

Railgames: In 1983 my friends and I played a lot of Rail Baron. The next year we discovered Empire Builder and played a lot of that until discovering the 18xx system when Avalon Hill released 1830: Railways & Robber Barons in 1986. Since the early 1990s I've played a lot of other railgames.

Eurogames: In the mid-1990s I started playing a lot of Euros. Part of this is because the gamers in my circle only want to play multi-player games, but also because many of these are outstanding games.

Chess: Although I consider it a separate hobby from gaming, I think I should mention that I used to be heavily involved in Chess. I played in and directed tournaments, solved and created compositions, taught children, visited a maximum security penitentiary to play prisoners, collected and read chess books, and played chess variants.

I frequently attend meeting of the Eastern Pennsylvania Gaming Society and Penn Gamers at The University of Pennsylvania. Each year I attend World Boardgame Championships.
