I'm a wife and mother of two happy and well adjusted young men, the youngest of which will be going off to college in the Fall. Years ago we were a family of four and thoroughly enjoyed playing 3-4 player games that included my somewhat non-gamer husband (he's a good sport though, when cornered). Unfortunately over time with our boys growing up we've been reduced to playing primarily 2-player games w/an occasionally 3-player. We've been playing and accumulating designer-style games since February of 2003.

our collection has grown, I've become much more selective in acquiring new games as available space has now become a concern. I thoroughly enjoy the thought process in determining my next game, especially if the choice is between two very similar themes, as in Age of Steam
. I will go from forum to forum reading and comparing reviews and session reports in order to draw a final conclusion that best fits my family's gaming style. I will then print out the rules if available ahead of time to familiarize myself with the game's mechanics before it arrives.
I have a certain affinity for games that scale well between 1-4 players, and in particular for those with a strong and worthy solo play (ex: Agricola
, Dungeon Twister 2: Prison
, and Race for the Galaxy
Regarding expansions in our possession, I will normally rate them, though if they are not self contained and playable on their own, I will not consider them 'owned'. It's an OCD thing with me, an 'owned' game is a complete game and expansions are simply add-ons. It seems redundant to consider all the expansion to Age of Steam
, Wizard Kings
, Blue Moon
, and Dungeon Twister
as 'owned', IMO.
UPDATE: 11-30-10, I've recently reconsidered what constitutes a 10
rating in the games that I own and chose to upgrade a few more to my list. These are based on a purely emotional recollection of play with longstanding appreciation and satisfaction of rules.
UPDATE: 1-14-12, I recently added quite a few boardgame microbadges for those special games that left me with wonderful memories of character-building competition with my nuclear family unit and a warm fuzzy-like feeling of contentment in a game well played.Dominant Species, our current obsession
