Game likes:

- games which present me a materially different challenge at the start each time. Standard setups are boring. Settlers and Dominion (for examples) present the players with a different game every time from the start. Most high ranked games give you a standard setup.
- 'controllable luck' (e.g. Settlers, Stone Age, CCGs, Shogun, San Juan, Dominion)
- civilization themes
- adventure games (in theory)
- runaway leader (if you play better then you should win!)
- elegant designs (e.g. Settlers, San Juan)
- trading
- negotiation but family not keen cry
- Settlers (closest to the perfect game)
- Bluffing (LOTR:Confrotation, CIA vs KGB, Hoity Toity)

Important to me is that to feel like I am doing whatever the theme is about. I want to feel like an explorer or a dinosaur or a farmer or whatever. I don't want roleplaying though - the feeling must come out of the gameplay, not out of the flavour text or whatever. I know this will sound funny, but I actually like Lost Cities because I feel like I am embarking on risky expeditions when I play - yes its an abstract game but the theme works.

Game dislikes:

- any downtime at all - I want to be involved in the game always, not just in 1/n of the game time where n=number of players. Very few games have the players doing something more than 1/n of the time. Settlers is one of the few. Clue is another.
- AA games (auctions plus actions - e.g. PoF, Goa, Taj Mahal etc etc etc etc etc)
- min/maxing VPs for various combinations of random stuff (e.g. Aquaretto, Agricola and the lame priest tracks in Terra Mystica)
- needless complexity
- chits
- adventure games (in reality)
- money
- Tactical miniatures (Memoir '44 is ok but Wings of War is not)

I really don't like it when I game with a theme makes a significant concession to the theme for gameplay purposes. Dominant Species, with its intelligent glaciers is an example. Game designers need to come up with imaginative solutions to integrate theme.
