How did it start?
Leikjavík is an initiative of several people living in Reykjavik, Iceland who are enthusiastic in meeting other people and play games together. For one year (since November 2009) we organized a similar small group and now decided to open a bigger space for a wide range of people. Why did it start?
Because we love to play games and meet new people through games. We were told by many people in the city that a place where anybody can come and play games for free is missing, not only for families but in general for anybody. Many people like to play games but are missing partners to play with, appropriate space, games and knowledge on how to play some games. How is it funded?
The City Hall of Reykjavík is the partner that made it all possible by granting our project with the fund it needed to get started. We applied our project on the 1st of September deadline for the grants "Vertu með í að skapa betri borg".
Then we are also supported by game shops in Reykjavík(FLGS), namely Spilavinir and Nexus. Individuals and families also give an important contribution by donating money, games and other materials. All these donations will be used in improving Leikjavík. Leikjavik would not be able to start and work without the help of our friends, volunteers and the whole community which started to gather with enthusiasm of getting involved. What do we hope to achieve by running the centere?
Just to offer a new place where people can spend time playing games and meeting other people that are also part of the Reykjavík community. We want to be opened for everybody - young people, old people, locals and foreigners, regulars and one-time visitors or travelers. The rule is - you can just come and join, any time during our opening hours, you do not need to sign up, all is free of charge, opened and easy.
