That is one lovely bottle.

Inside is a Belgian style ale, with a fairly classic lambic style sourness underlying the complex characteristics of the rest of the brew. There's a lot of dark fruit and spice in here. It reminds me of the really good dense dark fruitcake my friend Don makes, minus any sweetness one would find in said fruitcake.

Although the alcohol is pretty high here at 8%, it's nicely balanced and doesn't give either the heat or unpleasant phenolic flavours that most high alcohol beers seem to have (for my palate anyways)

These notes unedited and Google-translated from the Italian web site:

Beer of high fermentation, re-fermented in the bottle, colored monk's frock, inspired by the tradition of the great Belgian beers Abbey. On the nose with hints of caramel, fruit in brandy (pear, cherry, plum) and read roasting. In the mouth expresses warmth and complexity but reveals an unexpected final dry which makes drinking easier.
A beer dedicated to all those who still want to dream and never stop looking for happiness they deserve.

The history of this beer was quite troubled at the beginning was very different from what it looks like now. If we were to give a definition of style we can say that it looks like a Belgian Strong Dark Ale. In fact, the inspiration for this beer came to me from drinking (inside and outside Belgium) many beers, some of which go back a long time ago when I was still a kid, and I do not lie when I say that the first beer to arouse in me interest in this wonderful drink was precisely similar to Chimera today. It's a bit 'like chasing an illusion that you are in love a long time ago vagheggiando in the past, finding the awakening awareness that it is in search of dreams come true immortality of the spirit.

Serving suggestions : braised beef, pork stew, raw milk cheese at medium maturing.

Alc. 8.0% 18.0 ° P

Storage temperature : between +4 and +18 ° C (when stored in the refrigerator for longer preserves its characteristics)
Serving temperature between +10 and +14 ° C (depending on ambient temperature)
To be paid in large glasses which might contain abundant foam hat.

I have no idea whether this beer will be good, bad, or indifferent, but I need to express my displeasure at seeing a THIRD beer from the SAME BREWERY in a box that claims to have 24 unique* craft beers. Again, there are over 100 breweries in the Netherlands. Over 1300 in Germany. And no Belgians in the box! Seriously!

Also, since my Mr. Picky has been activated, the side of the box says 2 beers from the Netherlands. This would make it beer #3 from the Netherlands.

EPIC FAIL**

Crikey.

Now that it's out of my system, the ingredient list intrigues me. The beer supposedly has some bergamot in it, and I love bergamot (it's the lovely citrus fruit that makes Earl Grey tea so very good), and given that I like IPA that has that refreshing grapefruit zing on the palate, this one looks to be promising.

* is that "very unique" or "truly unique" or is this yet another example of how the word unique has inherently become yet another word like decimate where the original actual useful meaning has become perverted to something rather useless and generic.

** My friend Gerry is a beer expert. Next year I'm giving him $110 to make me a "unique" craft beer advent calendar. At least then there'll be 24 different breweries involved and the beers will be available locally.

Today's lovely post-work beer was a lovely creamy mouth feel full bodied cloudy yummy banana aroma wheat beer from Austria.

This is exactly the kind of wheat beer I love. It me crave the Elysian Fields Hydra, which is about as good as wheat beer gets.

Today's surprise is that it was a 0.5l bottle, not 0.33l - score! It's from the Heller brewing company of Bamberg in Germany and it's a Rauchbier!

Rauchbier is made from barley malt that's dried over an open flame - in this case, birchwood - and this is the real thing. If you head over to the Wikipedia page, you'll see this bottle as the representative image.

This picture is from my friend's Facebook page:

For more info, check out this web link: http://www.schlenkerla.de/rauchbier/beschreibunge.html

It's low in alcohol at just a touch over 5% ABV, but the flavour is wonderful. If you like Islay scotch, you'll love this.

So far, this is the best beer in the box.

From the Gusswerk brewery in Salzburg, Austria comes this rather tasty tripel.

Horny Betty - voluptuously organic

The triple and double mash fermentation ignite in her a passionate fire, fueled by "Horny Goat Weed", which in the traditional Chinese medicine plays an important role. Wonderfully broad, spicy, fruity aroma. Suitable for storage, because by the corks the flavors over the years to mature and develop so beautiful, sherry-like secondary flavors! In the beautiful 0.75 liter bottle of champagne

Triple Bock, 9.6% alc vol

Tripels are hit or miss with me. Often times the higher alcohol content gives it an unpleasant unbalanced heat on the palate, not to mention some phenolic flavours that I'm just not keen on.

This one is mild, balanced, very tasty, and goes extremely well with the chocolate I'm pairing it with. If I see it anywhere locally, I'll buy this one in a heartbeat.

A break from the streak of Austrian beers is this offering from Germany, the Bergquell Kirsch Porter.

Cherry-Porter

The black among the fruits.
Cherry-Porter is another brewing specialty in the Porter family of beers, which consists of 95% Lausitzer Porter and 5% cherry with the taste of heart-cherry.

The black among the fruits is not only cherry and delicious, also extremely drinkable.

This specialty is available in a completely new box with 0.5-liter longneck bottles.

Packaging:

20 x 0,5l-Bottles
24 x 0,33l-Bottles

Now, having spent those key formative teen years living in Germany and being able to drink beer at an age that is not legal in any jurisdiction in North America, I know a few things about German beer.

For one, the Reinheitsgebot means that Germany makes excellent beer, but unlike Belgium the rules don't allow them to make things like Kriek.

For two, there's a scary word on the label for beer aficionados - "Biermischgetränk", which translates as the beer equivalent of a wine cooler.

Germans are fond of Radler, i.e. Shandy, and I've also seen beer and coke mixed at events, so this is going to be something sweet and not very porter like at all.

Yes folks, another Austrian beer.

Notes nicked from the Craft Beer Advent Calendar Facebook page.

This beautiful beer gets its colour from caramelized malts, which also provide a gentle sweetness and hints of toast. This style of beer is called Vienna lager and, not surprisingly, the best examples come from Austria such as this one from Hirter (www.hirterbier.at). You won't find many examples better than this one.

Today's Austrian beer is a Festbock from the lovely Schloss Eggenberger brewery.

At 7.1% ABV it packs a punch, but it has a very pleasant smooth flavour and has just a tiny hit of sweetness on the palate that offsets the alcohol - I often find high ABV beers to have an unpleasing (to me) boozy flavour that in wine is usually offset by a set of flavours you just don't find in beer.

I note too that the English site does not have the Festbock listed, but that it has the Mac Queen Nessie listed, so this is the second time then that the calendar has given out something from the same brewery.

That's really inexcusable.

There are two projects I've been keeping an eye on. One is for GMT Games' Thunder Alley, and the other is the reprint of Up Front.

Both projects asked for $30,000. Thunder Alley has just barely cracked $10K, and Up Front is ticking along past $150K. The former will most likely fail with only 4 days left to go, and the latter has clearly made it.

It struck me as I was watching these two projects that what many KS projects really have going for them are the stretch goals. "Only $x more and we'll throw in ... a free turnip twaddler!"

The stretch goals seem to engender the same kind of feeding frenzy I've seen at live auctions. I still remember the time a friend of mine was asked to bid on something at the auction with a top price of $x and the bidding quickly got down to two people - my friend, and the person on whose behalf he was supposed to be bidding who happened to be across the room. The person had gotten so excited that he jumped in.

I'm sorry to see that the Thunder Alley project won't make it. It'll get published eventually under the P500, but it would have been nice to see the game out sooner.
