I've been a gamer basically all of my life. I remember as a kid, we used to have family game nights all the time. Sure, much of it was playing either Risk or Monopoly, but we also had a lot of other cool games around the house like Survive!, The Inventors and one of my faves as a kid, Speed Curcuit. Of course, we also had an Intellivision and Commodore 64 back in the day, so I was also impacted by some early video games too.
As I grew older, those video games started to replace boardgames to a larger degree, although we still often had our family game nights, even while in college. Gaming with my friends was more some RPG's (although campaigns never lasted for more than a few sessions) and Warhammer 40K for several years. Although I loved 40K, we spent more time building and painting armies than we did playing. Then someone in our group discovered Cosmic Encounter and that changed things quite dramatically. I fondly remember hour after hour of playing CE for several years and we wore out the copy that my buddy owned. Eventually, that opened the door to things like Munchkin and Chez Geek before we stumbled upon Days of Wonder. My first intro to Euro games was Ticket to Ride and it made me realize how much the boardgame industry had evolved through the years.
I never got much into buying lots of boardgames since I moved away from most of the people I knew and then started a small game group based on Axis and Allies minis and some other skirmish type games. I still played Warhammer off and on until I came across other gamers in the town I lived in. We now have an active game group that consists of upwards of 12 people who meet once a week. My game collection has now grown because of this. My tastes in gaming also change quite often depending on who in our group shows up every week.
I am married a lovely woman who bears with my gaming complex, but does not embrace it. I have two children, a daughter who is seven and a son who is six who will be avid gamers as they continue to grow. I'm sure that my son and I will have some epic game nights of our own as he grows older.
My current Top Ten are the games that I most want to play during or weekly game nights and enjoy the most right now. My Hot Ten consists of the five most recent purchases I have made and the five games I most want to buy.
If any of you are ever in the Okanagan area of B.C., drop me a line as I'm always open to meeting new players and am often open for a game of virtually anything. I'm also open to trades on a regular basis as I have to keep my gaming collection in check to keep my lovely wife happy!!
