If you’re reading my profile, chances are it’s because you saw my photos or read something I said about a kid’s game. Most of my contributions on BGG revolve around children’s games because that’s where I’ve found that I can add the most. There are more than enough reviews and photos of Power Grid, Settlers of Catan, and the like here. But when you get to some of the children’s games, the content is pretty sparse. One of the things I like about this hobby is the ability to share it with my family, so having good content for children’s games is important to me.
Most of my gaming these days is with my two daughters, but I also play games with my wife and other couples (when we’re not too tired from chasing the kids) and with a game group that I’ve been in since high school (more than 20 years ago). My favorites to play with families and couples are the Ticket to Ride series, Palazzo, Alhambra, and Elfenland. With gamers, I like Twilight Imperium 3, 18xx, and Power Grid. When I first found BGG, I got very caught up in the cult of the new; I still like trying new games, but I’m also trying to make sure that the old favorites get the plays they deserve.
Besides making me a children’s game connoisseur, being a parent has also made me a photographer. I bought a digicam for the arrival of my first daughter, but after she started walking, and then running, I discovered that it didn’t respond fast enough and I wound up with a lot of blurry, poorly-framed photos. So I upgraded to a Canon Digital Rebel XT SLR.
After owning the SLR for a year or so, I decided to actually learn how to use it properly. I wouldn’t say that I’m a great photographer, but I’ve managed to take some pretty decent shots of my kids.
As I started to learn more about photography, I thought it would be fun to try to take some shots of games just to practice my skills. I submitted some of these here and was surprised at the positive reception, so I submitted more. Most of my photos are of children’s games, because those tend to be most in need of photos. If you look at my photo gallery, you’ll see that the earlier photos are mediocre at best and often quite bad. I think I’ve steadily been improving, but I still have a lot that I can learn.
