Just because some people on BGG use the flag only to display their current residence and not their nationality: I am a German living in Germany.
As you can see my preferences in gaming are science fiction, followed by fantasy and history.
My favorite fictional backgrounds are Dune, followed by Warhammer 40k, The Lord of the Rings and The Runelords.
The Ancient History and the Middle Ages are my favorite ages of history.
I enjoy both board and card games. I prefer games which include a lot of combat, though there are some exceptions.
Although I registered at BGG in September 2004, I only did so for downloading files. Later, when I started boardgaming anew after my first experience with boardgaming in my youth I started to become more active in the "Geek". That was in 2006. However, only in 2011 did I really delve deeply into BGG and started to contribute and discuss more.
My first experience with boardgaming dates back to when I played the first edition of Space Hulk and the German editions of Space Crusade (StarQuest) and HeroQuest. I played both games until I got sick of them, and it took a lot of sessions to get to this point. With my brother and a friend I even made a huge set of house rules for campaign games of StarQuest. Afterwards I started playing Shogun and Axis & Allies from the MB Gamemaster Series.
Then came a huge break where I stopped boardgaming to become a tabletop gamer. The skills I learned as one are very useful now, as I learned up to a certain level how to paint and convert miniatures. Sometimes I employ these skills to modify my board games.
When War of the Ring was released I started boardgaming again, even made the German FAQ for War of the Ring and its expansion. That was in 2006. War of the Ring led me to the companies Fantasy Flight Games, Phalanx Games and Heidelberger Spieleverlag and made me acquire more games from them, like Talisman, Doom and Monster & Mythen (Warriors). This in turn led me to BGG and to other cool games like Battlestar Galactica and Horus Heresy.
