Hello my name is Jordan Czop and welcome to my humble corner of BGG.
I joined BGG in late August of 2011. I likely joined BGG because there was a contest that I wanted to take part in; to do this I required an account. What began as a casual visit transformed into a long-term-stay when I realized what a great community is here on BGG.
Now, on to some things about me:
I have a degree in Child and Youth Care from the University of Victoria (UVic). Which is located in my hometown of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. I feel fortunate to live in such a beautiful city. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Victoria. It is located on an island slightly to the south-west of Vancouver. Victoria is known as the "Garden City" although if you looked at my front lawn you might wonder if the title is deserved.
I graduated from UVic in late 2009 and began work as a Family Development Worker immediately after graduation. I have since changed workplaces but I continue in a similar role as a Family Support Worker. What is a Family Support Worker? Well, I fill many roles in my position but most often I am supporting families involved with Child Protective services. I enjoy what I do despite the inherent challenges in this line of work.
My board gaming journey started young; I grew up playing the typical riff-raff of Parker-Brothers: Monopoly
and The Game of Life
, among others. Looking back I remember disliking these games a lot as it always seemed to end with someone crying or the board getting flipped. Fast-forward a few years and I began playing games with a friends family after dinners. We played Rook
extensively in addition to simple games like BANG!
and Circus Flohcati
. My favorite game was one we played with Rook cards that we dubbed "The Bidding Game". I am told it is akin to the game Wizard
It was from this friend that I was introduced to the game that really drew me in to board games. That game was Catan
. I had never played anything like it. Here was a game that: didn't end in screaming, was engaging, and was a lot of fun. I played the stink out of Settlers. Then, for whatever reason, I forgot about Settlers and moved on.
For a while there was a lapse in time where I didn't really play anything. Around that time I bought a PS2 as well as a computer so my interests shifted to video games. For many years I almost forgot about board games save for the game Star Fleet Battles
that I was introduced to by a teacher at school. We would play as a small group of teens during our 40 min lunch break. If you know anything about SFB it is that the game can take a fair amount of time...well maybe not that long but when you only have 40 min to setup and play a drawn out battle it can seem like one battle was quite long. This did server to make the games feel more epic and the defeats/victories all that much more flagrant. I enjoyed playing SFB but, for one reason or another, the group disbanded and the game was all but forgotten.
Fast forward a few years and after graduating and spending a little time in Japan and Thailand I got married and had two children. I began collecting a few games that were out at the time such as: Puerto Rico
, Thurn and Taxis
and my own copy of Settlers. I enjoyed (and still enjoy) these games but played them nominally with friends.
In late 2011, around the time that I registered on BGG, I was introduced to Dominion
and shortly after that was given Innovation
for my birthday. The combination of these two games significantly amplified my desire to play games on a more regular basis. Another factor influencing this new-found interest was that I had recently quit playing video games for various reasons.
In December of 2011 I discovered that a local gaming convention was held each year in my hometown called GottaCon
. This introduced me to a good number of games and gamers in the local area. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend this convention in 2013 but plan to make it out each year as it is a full-out blast!
Currently, I love gaming and have slowly collected a number of games
that I enjoy and play regularly with a few gamer friends.
My currently most-love games are: Android: Netrunner
, Blood Bowl: Team Manager – The Card Game
, Lords of Waterdeep
, The Princes of Florence
, Glory to Rome
(Version I.V.), and Summoner Wars
to name a few. This is somewhat of a fluctuating list but these are the games I am always be willing to play.
I think that is all I want to say for now and I want to thank you for taking the time to read my profile.
PS. I love chatting with other gamers via Geekmail so send me a GM if you feel so inspired
